mTES4 and BAIN for multiple clones

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 6:26 am

I have looked through the mTES4 threads, WIPZ AND RELZ, and the last couple of BASH/BAIN ones and haven't been able to find how to have multiple instances of the BAIN packages folders for each clone. I did read that Psymon said there was something in the original mTES4 thread about it but was not able to find it. Would greatly appreciate some guidance or a link to where the information is. Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is how I did it;

(Appended from the mTES4 relz thread)
I deleted everything I'd done previously and started over, this time saying No to a private BAIN folder. Once the clone was done I manually created a new Oblivion Mods folder for that clone, appended with that clones name (i.e. Oblivion Mods_Testing), and manually copied my Oblivion Mods to it. I then updated that clones Mopy/bash.ini file to point to that folder.

Good luck.

Hey Older Than Dirt,

Not sure if this is what you are after but I'm sure that when I just reinstalled the newest and latest Wrye Bash it allowed me to choose multiple paths to install to!? I'm sure thats what it did!? Perhaps that will help having the multiple package folders.

I'm happy to be corrected if this isn't the case :) would be interested to know what exactly its for then!

I did a full clean reinstall of Oblivion today and installed Wrye Bash 291. I did not get an option to choose multiple paths that I can remember at least. Guess I can uninstall it and then reinstall and see what happens now that I have a couple of clones made with mTES4. Thanks for the input.

Thanks, I think I see what he's saying here. Will do a little experimentation. What an old man like me really needs is a roadmap.

Hey you could have just asked me - PM is fine.

Gaticus was working the Wry Bash team to develop a better system for multiple game instances to access the same BAIN folder but read it differently with regard to what is installed per game instance. But then he disappeared.

So I've been getting by with multiple BAIN folders - one for each install basically.

This can be done by first activating a clone then going into the MOPY folder in the Oblivion folder and looking for the bash_default.ini - copy and rename it to bash.ini (if there is not a bash.ini already). edit that ini and look for the line that says sOblivionMods=..\Oblivion Mods (this is the default setting). Change each of the clones bash.ini to a different setting from the other clones.

So here are a few of mine:
sOblivionMods=I:\Games\BAIN Archives\Oblivion Main Mods
sOblivionMods=I:\Games\BAIN Archives\Oblivion Alt Mods
sOblivionMods=I:\Games\BAIN Archives\Nehrim Mods

Doing this takes up much more disc space (cheap these days) but does allow you to have BAIN active for each install and in a way that they do not interfere with each other. The downside is that updates that are used in both setups take twice as long to update. That actually is a drag, but hey - multiple games.

Gaticus - come back

Ok, I'm using a rather basic mundane setup (name wise) at the moment. I have Oblivion (base install) and 2 clones so I guess mine should look like so:

sOblivionMods=C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Mods
sOblivionMods=C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Mods_Ob Clone 1
sOblivionMods=C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Mods_Ob Clone 2

I am assuming your subfolders, BAIN Archives, are so they are just not under the same main folder your games are in.
I appreciate the answers greatly.

I can't recommend enough that you don't install in the default location for the game i.e. C:\Bethesday Softworks\ .... especially if you have Vista of Win 7 as the UAC will play havok with the tools like Wrye bash and mTES4 Manager.

Use a non-default location.

Yes the subfolders are in them - what the ini points to is the top folder Oblivion Mods that is the important piece for this part.

Yes I do use Vista but the default is under Program Files\Beth....... so this is a non-default location. Been doing this from day one. thanks for the help, Believe I am finally getting it straight.

Hi Psymon, I was just creating a new clone to do a second install of Nehrim.

I called it Nehrim 2 & renamed the old Nehrim install to Nehrim 1 then switched back to it & now I'm getting the " unable to switch message".

I'm guessing that it has something to do with renaming the Nehrim folder but buggered if I know what :cryvaultboy: .

It's the first issue that Iv'e had for months but it's also the first new clone that Iv'e created for a while as well.

I know Gaticus has disappeared, but has there been any further understanding as to what causes this issue. I rebooted the computer & have no files of any kind open, but it still keeps giving me the same message

Can't say I know - especially after trying to help others solve problems I've never had.

One thing though - I would have changed the name of the original Nehrim then tested if it could switch between it and other Oblivion clones then made a new clone. Not all at once and I would have tested at every step.

Seems though like all these issues are UAC related to me due to it making folders in the App Data folder and the My Games folder.

Hi The problem sorted itself out & I still have no idea as to the cause. Beebee
