Worried about Hand to Hand Combat

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 3:04 am

I have read through all the new previews which are on the whole a fantastic read and they all agree Skyrim looks fantastic! However there is one thing that has popped up in at least 2 preview articles I have read, and that is the hit detection seems off in melee battles, almost as if they are lagging during the fight! One example of this observation is written here from the Ausgamers site who were in attendance to Todds Demo :

Our first taste of combat was in the first-person, and I did feel that more work needed to be done on contact animation and hit detection - it just looked a little laggy, or out. I’m sure this is something that can be broached by the time the game is released in November, but it'd be remiss to preview the game and not bring it up.

There was one other article that I will find the link to that also mentioned the same thing, now I am a little worried about this I must admit, melee battles are one of the more important aspects of the game I would have thaught? Is hit detection and lag something that Bethesda can fix before the looming November release or is too far into production to fix?

Its the only real aspect of the demo that the audience haven't raved about which has me worried!

I think you mean melee combat in general. I haven't even seen or heard one instance of hand-to-hand combat in Skyrim. I have a feeling that combat style will be as useless as it was in the previous TES titles.

Melee combat and dragon battles are the only two things that concern me about this game.

Will the better animations, shield bashing, weapon combinations, slight magnetism and finishing moves really make the melee combat that much better than Oblivion?

Will dragons really be exciting, refreshing, and fun to fight? Granted, they are unscripted and have a variety of attacks and moves at their disposal, but will battles degenerate into boring hack/slash and heal spams?

You are correct, I just woke up and was looking for the right words, edited my post, melee is indeed what I meant kind sir :)

Yeah that is what I am worried about too, if they don't get melee fights right it would ruin some of the immersion I would have thaught? Having hit detection off and lagging would have to be an issue that should have been solved pre-demo?

Agree with the OP about being worried. Just read a new preview http://www.giantbomb.com/news/skyrim-is-looking-like-the-elder-scrolls-evolved/3048/ that stated this:
Melee combat in Skyrim looks largely unchanged from Oblivion
. I have read a few recent hands on that have stated this. I thought Bethesda said they were focusing on the melee to make it brutal and actually feel like you were making contact. I should have known better when the only combat shown in the debut video showed the character jumping and spinning and swinging his sword with the enemy falling down and the sword never even coming close to connecting. I was really hoping in 5 years they could have made some ground there. Must be a limitation of Gamebryo "the Creation Engine".

The other thing that worries me is the cinematic auto kills that the preview keep talking about. They say they are kind of random, but don't state how often they occur. I hate it when games pull the camera back to show my character doing something cool. Anytime it does that in the middle of a fight it kills the immersion for me. To me it feels too much like a QTE where "enemy is fatigued, press A NOW to watch a cool kill!" Why couldn't they just have a random % chance of your weapon penetrating upon the killing blow that would either cause the occasional dismemberment or sword penetration. Fatalities just seem kind cheesy

As I posted in another topic, the fighting will be fine so long as this plays when you get into a single fight with an enemy. XD

Seriously?

Its a game in development one should expect MAJOR systems to have flaws and bugs.If this was September/october i could see a reason to be concern but its not its bloody april. and the game has only just been announced.

Doesn't that sorta defeat the purpose? I don't want to be swinging 3 ft away from the enemy's face and have it hit, for me that would ruin a fair bit of the battle immersion! :shakehead:

If the media picked something like that up,i'm sure bethesda are aware of it,it will get sorted, don't worry.
As for hand-to-hand i'm a fan of it,and now we know the three missing skills, there could be a strong indication hand-to-hand is still there,i hope so. With new animations and a focus on more intensive combat,hand-to-hand could be exciting....And don't forget, they added kicking animation in the shivering isles.I think it was the flesh zombie things ( forgot their name ),they did standing and jumping kicks if i remember right. We'll see soon enough.
