OBSE plugin question

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:28 am

Would it be possible to make an OBSE plugin that "redirects" the saving routine? Would it be possible to make a plugin that causes the game to save in the background, like Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas?

I know nothing about OBSE plugin coding, but with the stuff that Skyranger can do with OSR, it doesn't seem to be too far-fetched.

I think streamline already has the functionality you are looking for? Do you want the game to automatically save for you every once in a while, but, NOT use an autosave??

Yeah, sounds like Streamsave to me, too.

No, no, no. I mean save in the background to remove the save delay. F3 and F:NV experience no saving pause. With Oblivion, when you save, the game freezes for a couple of seconds with heavily modded games.

Not for me it doesn't. Case by case, perhaps?

And have you modded FO3 and/or FONV to the same extent as the Oblivion you're talking about there, and in (more or less) the same ways?

If not, you might find, with the hardware you're using, the same thing would happen with those games. Makes sense, really. Saving is saving, regardless. At some stage, something actually has to written to the HDD. There's no getting around that. And if that's going to take a while, for whatever reason(s), well...

The Fallout iteration of the engine is simply a lot more efficient at making saves than Oblivion is. Two years time difference allowed Bethesda to update a lot of things that were wrong with Oblivion.

It's highly doubtful you'll be able to do anything about this unless you have access to the game's source code. Seriously, I think you're worrying too much about this. Just ignore it.

No, my Fallout is no where near as modded as Oblivion.

It's just irritating, is all.

The code involved in saving a game is not thread-safe, so it cannot be run in the background.
