I was thinking to try out FCOM but in case it doesn't work out I don't want to lose my current setup. So, I was wondering if it woul work if I renamed my games/bethesda/oblivion folder to oblivion-original and then reinstall the game, and switching between FCOM and original by renaming the folders.

Just make a backup of your data file on your desktop.

In fact, I have multiple data files and just switch them out for different types of modded games.
