[WIP] Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide for Newbies

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:31 am

Reading through the guides I'm fairly confident I will be able to change downloaded mods into BAIN installers (so for that, THANK YOU! :D). Only thing I'm unsure about are mods that aren't already archived. For example, I have downloaded a file designed to be merged in wyre bash which is a .scr file. I understand how the file works.. replacing/adding details over the other mod, but where do I place it? Does it go straight into the bash patches folder seperately? Or can I place it in an archive and under installers?

Also what do I do about installer, such as frans .exe for example? Do they HAVE to be installed

Lastly, I am also confused on install order. It states in the guide that install order is very important or just as important than the BOSS order. Because I've used BOSS for so long I've gotten lazy with ordering and have completely forgotten what order is best to install mods in. I noticed, as your guide displays, that wyre bash recommends using markers, are these groups within the markers meant to represent teh order in which you should install the mods? Or are they simply there to just keep them more organised?

If so, is it possible to let me know what order mods are installed best in? I have already read up on the FCOM mod install, should I just install FCOM after base install (after dlc/shivering isles) as described and then all other mods straight afterwards? Does it matter what order they are installed in after FCOM?

Nm, I should probably use this shouldn't I? http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=guides_mod_installation&subpage=complete_installation_guide&step=7&method=b

Screen 13 of the Installers Advanced guide gives all the file and folder types currently recognised by Wrye Bash - .scr file? hmm, screensaver file?, I dont think that is related to an oblivion install. ( Think along the lines of personalizing your desktop, right click, screensavers usually end with .scr file extension, where you got the idea to merge one of those into a bashed patch I have no idea :) )

.exe's are executeable files, usually an installer itself which will not be recognised in a Wrye Bash BAIN, its purpose I would imagine is to be run on its own (similar to the new Wrye Bash 291 Installer.exe)

And for Markers, purely for your own organisational purpose - But the recommended list is just a suggestion of marker names to give you an idea of where to place them ( and also based on users previous recommendations as to what categories of mods should overwrite others )....

? DLC - Create this marker Lowest in your install order (By default lowest is visually at the top, Highest at the bottom (Check the Order Column, High number = Highest))
------- If you have Official DLC's in BAINs put them here in your install order, Horsearmour, Orrery, VileLair, Mehrunesrazor, Spelltomes....
If you dont have any DLC's in BAINs (say you installed them off a GOTY DVD for instance) - No need for a DLC Marker

? Unofficial Patches
------- UOP, USIP, UOMP, UOP Supplementals here (And read the documentation as to which should overwrite the other - Arthmoors supplementals should overwrite both UOP and UOMP for instance, which also patch DLC's fixing bugs in the original Official versions above - hence why this category of installers should be higher than DLCs in the install order)

? DarN

? Sounds

? World textures - expandable

~snip~

Its just a good recommendation for an Install order for all different kinds of mods - and not to be confused with Load order under the mods tab.
How detailed you want to go into organising your BAINs is up to you, and further refining your install order is down to use of the Conflicts reports for each Installer.

Here's my current Install Order to compare how I use markers, I have my own names for markers and groups but I am confident what I want in game, is, and I used the general recommendation as a basis tailored to the content I have and the way I like to categorise them, some you will notice are later than the recommendation, DarN for instance does not conflict with anything else for me (well, apart from Display Stats but thats in the same category of mods and overwritten as necessary), so really can be anywhere in my install order, and UOP Supplementals I have installing after RAEVWD and AWLS because when I created this Arthmoors advice was his files which conflict with those mods were newer (that advice may be old already after developments I briefly read about earlier which happened this weekend just gone, and the fact I have a newer version of AWLS today too, which now should overwrite RAEVWD whereas the reverse used to be true) ...

Also note - Quite a few of the following are not fully installed, particularly in the body mod section where I have sub-packages you cannot see here where I am mixing up combinations of parts to achieve what I want in game - Just warning anyone reading this really if they think they can just grab the same file ID's and install them in this order they will have a fair few problems :)

As you may have guessed I dont use FCOM, MMM, OOO (prefer T.I.E personally for a more stable game on less than cutting edge machines, and its easier to manage for the family setup here), so what you do with frans.exe I would suggest you read the install instructions, and as you guessed, TomLongs marvellously detailed expansion on those subjects

EDIT: And please note - I do not want this topic to diverge into a solve your personal installation problems dialogue, the discussion here is development of the Wrye Bash Pictorial Guides - If you need further help open a new topic.

Fair fair. Thanks for the advice/install list. We all have to start somewhere. ;) And I have NO idea where I got '.scr' from, I meant to say .csv file (COMPLETELY different). That's what an entire day of downloading Oblivion Mods does to your mind you know... O_o It's a file to merge in Wyre Bash, I know that much.. just wasn't ENTIRELY sure where to place it. Best to just place it in the Patch folder with the others I think. ;)

((Tbh, I'm not entirely sure why I want to use FCOM. I think i'm just too addicted to alchemy that I must have infinite types of monsters to pulp into soup! (Even though I block pretty much half of MMM because it's not my taste). Hmm... maybe I'll try an OOO+TIE setup and see where it takes me.. interesting..))

EDIT: Apologies if I hijacked the thread a bit. I'll admit I was going off topic with my personal installation. Hoped there was a rough install order people should be following, but I guess there isn't as everyone's mods will be different right?

I have re-read the guide and the conflict section (page 2) definately makes more sense in this regard (as suggested on page 14). I'm actually wondering if it would be better placing page 14 after page 2 of the advanced installer guide. As page 14 is more of an extra, placing it after page 2 will fit in nicely without breaking the guide order apart - as long as it is clear it is not essential, which think it already is by starting: 'If you want to add more organisation...'.

As it is very beneficial and directly related to the content of page 2, to me at least, this would make sense. What do you think? I admit, the reader (ie me :P) could just turn back to page 2 (conflicts) as a reminder, but seems like something worth noting at the time it would be needed I guess. I'm probably babbling now so I'll leave it there. I hope I've added something to this topic. :S

~ I meant to say .csv file ~ Best to just place it in the Patch folder with the others I think. ;)

Aah those, ~path to oblivion installation~\Oblivion\Data\Bash Patches\ <<-- In here with the ones installed by Wrye Bash, though if the mod version of a .csv file is going to overwrite one installed by Wrye Bash, I would check out which is the more recently produced (not sure if there are any out there that would overwrite Wrye Bash's installed .csv's but you never know - Never had one personally) - And somewhere in the documantation for the mod how it is used should be mentioned, but if not they show up in Wrye Bash patching options when you rebuild the Bashed Patch under Import Names (see screen 6 of the basics guide - I have it highlighted).

From the Wrye Bash.html (in the mopy\ folder)...

Import Names
? Overview
This component is intended to merge changes from a renamer mod (e.g., Rational Names <http://www.wryemusings.com/Rational%20Names%202.html>) or file into other mods. It will also (to a small degree) handle localization of foreign language mods. An example of a renamer mod is Rational Names.
? Configuration:
? Source mods are automatically recognized if they have a Names tag in the mod description.
? Source text files are automatically recognized if they are in the Oblivion\Data\Bash Patches directory and end with Names.csv. Note that the Export/Import Names command will export files in this format.
? Limitations:
? Handles most named objects types (except lights). Does not handle GMSTs, cells, landmarks or dialogs. If source mods is fully covered (no GMSTs, cells, etc.) then it does not need to be loaded after merging.
? Guard Names
? A names patcher file that covers guards, legion soldiers, couriers, and a few other generically named characters and creatures from both Oblivion and Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. ; * http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=123. However, ranks have been strongly tweaked from Flak's version and OOO names have been added.
? %ModName% Names
? A names patcher file that names/renames NPCs etc. in specified mod.
? Authors: Crowded Roads Revamped ~ Spotty42, Crowded Roads Revisited ~ Smooth
? Rational Names
? A names patcher file for Rational Names is included. This includes all of the name changes of the Rational Names 2 mod (but not the GMST settings for soul gem strings). It also includes additional name changes to cover Shivering Isles, Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and a few more mods.
? Note that it is best not to edit this file directly since it is included in the Bash distribution. Instead, duplicate and edit as desired.

This hits on something that has been bugging me for a while, to me also the Installers Advanced guide still doesn't flow as well as I want it to for the reader.... So yep there will be a change in future to that guide, exact position and final content of each screen TBD when I re-do - But for now real life is getting in the way :), I was just glad recently to get enough time (well some of it I should have been in dreamland to be honest) and finally finish making all the guides Colour Blind friendly.

Anyway glad someone else thinks the same and reminded me it needs a bit of a re-think, because I was going to wander off making another Installers Creation addition to go with UOP and DarkUI DarN next instead.

So thank you for the nudge. Glad you like the rest of it so far anyway :)

Notes to self: above re-vamp of Installers Advanced plus include this ... http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1161724-bain-sub-package-installation-order/page__gopid__17061368#entry17061368

Minor Update 24th Feb 2011

Installers Advanced PDF; Updated screen 2, note added on naming conventions of BAIN sub-packages (as noted above for addition)

Also additional screen 15 reference installing OBSE plugins via Wrye Bash.

Complete JPG's file re-uploaded to include the above changes to the Advanced PDF.

Not quite the re-vamp of the Installers Advanced mentioned previously; Main reason being myk002's development of BAIT which looks like it will change the Installers Tab enough to warrant a complete re-do of the Installers Advanced PDF ... So put that on hold for now.

Functionally I do not think it will change that much (from a users perspective, though certainly a lot more convenient/user friendly), but visually the Installers Advanced PDF will be put out of date when BAIT is incorporated into Wrye Bash.

Minor Update 25th Feb 2011 - Installers Advanced PDF; Updated screen 2, note added on naming conventions of BAIN sub-packages - Reason for update?, I got one word wrong  Where it said 'numerically named win' should have read 'alphabetically named win'

Edit: Anyone wanting to download from TESAlliance - Give them a few hours to realise there has been an update and authorise it, files have been uploaded.

New updated file 28th Feb 2011 - Wrye Bash INI Tweaks Xtras - Just a few more ini tweaks added, if you have ever wanted to change the game settings for textures Large, Medium, Small without going into the game and then having to restart ...

For instance you have installed new textures via Wrye Bash BAIN and want to go straight into the game with Medium Textures setting - You now have an ini tweak to set it via Wrye Bash before you launch the game.....

http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=9418175initweaks-install.jpg
http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=5171616initweaks-use.jpg

Probably of limited use, but I find it handy occasionally testing out different textures on the laptop (which normally runs with Medium textures) which are destined for the Desktop (Always on Large textures). Once tried, while I am un-installing on the laptop in Wrye Bash BAIN, switching back to Medium game textures is now in the INI Tweaks tab of Wrye Bash.

Not released yet but for anyone interested - I have re-done the Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide ready for 292 release, most of the Basics and Intro to installers guide has been overhauled, with an extra screen for Basics (decided to add another Saves Tab screen highlighting the repair ABomb option), but saw no need to update screen 6 because none of the new changes to Wrye Bash change anything there ( and to be honest making that screen keeping it colour blind friendly is a pain ). The Installers Advanced pdf will be re-upped aswell, not due to any changes in Wrye Bash but because there was one remaining typo and it was bugging me. Will upload around the same time as Wrye Bash 292 (otherwise 291 users will be wondering where all these new screens and options are).
I also changed screen 4 of the Intro to Installers section - It was a bit confused looking and the UOPS is in the wrong Install Order position.

As soon as Wrye Bash 292 is released it will be closely followed by this. Myk002's BAIT (revamp of the Installers Tab) is still WIP so the Installers Advanced pdf is just going to be updated for the minor typo at the moment.

alt3rn1ty,

Yes, I am definitely interested and watching what you are doing to the guide (and I doubt if I am alone in this regard). I'm still a light weight user of Wrye Bash, but will need to dig into it sometime in the future (when I get to upgrade my PC) to realize my true world of oblivion. When I do, I will ONLY be able to do it because of your guide (well, and lots of others willing to answer questions : )

After seeing what they did with Skyrim (Tes 5?), it would appear I will be playing Oblivion for another couple of years (heh, probably Morrowind also : )

Thanks mucho,

Tarl
