36 Lessons question

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:37 am

I have a question which involves this verse:

'The fire is mine: let it consume thee,
And make a secret door
At the altar of Padhome,
In the House of Boet-hi-Ah
Where we become safe
And looked after.'

First off, what is the fire? Is it the same "brilliant flame" that armors the ruling king? For what reason does it console the dying? I have ideas, but they are broken...

Chimer were daedra worshipers. What is more comforting, than going to see your god(ess)?

Being consumed by ritual fires on your death helps speed your spirit to Boethiah, where it is "kept and looked after."

This is all just my personal first thoughts, without having looked up the context of the quote.

'The fire is mine: let it consume thee,

Red Mountain - a fiery volcano. To put it more mystically, the crucible of the alchemical fire of change that flows from the Heart of Lorkhan (the Soul of Padhome) and purifies all it touches. This is the fire that, mythically speaking, transformed the golden Velothi Aldmer/Chimer into the ashen Dunmer (which is actually a reversal of our world's usual alchemical progression).

And make a secret door

The Tribunal is described elsewhere as 'the secret triangular gate'. More generically, a 'secret door' is a symbol of personal transcendence. 'Secret triangular gates' are often (in real-world mysticism) a euphemism for a particular kind of 'transcendence'. Since children read this forum, let's just say it's something only girls have...

At the altar of Padhome,

Red Mountain/Vvardenfell/Morrowind - a place where Padhome's aspects (the Daedra) are worshipped.

In the House of Boet-hi-Ah

The Velothi (-->Chimer-->Dunmer) are the 'House' that Boethiah built (because Boethiah is said to have instructed them in forming their Great House social system, as well as in 'responsible architecture').

Where we become safe
And looked after.'

Morrowind is the Promised Land of the Velothi/Chimer/Dunmer, where they could escape persecution for their heterodox beliefs.

What about this quote:

Above me is a challenge, which bathes itself in fire and the essence of a god.

I would think it's the challenge of the Sharmat, which really does bathe himself in fire and the essence of a god, despite not actually being one.

Above, because it's the highest point of the hero's journey; the climix.

But you have to go through Vivec to prove yourself: "Through me you are desired, unlike the prophets that have borne your name before."

You'll probably need another snippet, which appears much later:
"Above them all is the horizon where only one stands, though no one stands there yet."

Perhaps its related to the fact that Vehk is portrayed as having his head on fire.

Thanks for the replies, guys. They really are helpin me alot.

But what could the "brilliant flame" be that the ruling king is in:

"The ruling king is armored head to toe in brilliant flame. He is redeemed by each act he undertakes. His death is only a diagram back to the waking world. He sleeps the second way. The Sharmat is his double, and therefore you wonder if you rule nothing.

I think I get, or can figure out, the rest; I just want to know what the "flame" is.
