Mods that fit snuggly into the universe

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:08 am

I recently purchased Oblivions Deluxe edition on Steam. Now, I've played this game enough on the consoles but on the PC I'm wanting to have some nice mods. After I had a quick glance at the Nexus I've noticed an overwhelming amount of "Armoured G-String Suit" and "Jiggly Boobs" sort of content. Sure, that might appeal to someone out there but I'm looking for all sorts of mods that improve the Oblivion experience, make it more immersive and add more "plausible" content. What I mean is basically mods that seem pretty fitting and not completely ridiculous for the Oblivion universe. Anyone able to get me started on a few decent, game improving mods?

A few good mods for lore-friendly quests and locations:

Integration: The Stranded Light
AFK_Weye
Arthmoor's villages

Anything TheNiceOne has ever released is awesome, imho. OBSE, of course, to make said mods (and hundreds of others) usable. DarNUI/DarNified Dark UI will make a big difference every time you open a menu.

I suggest starting with http://amito.freehostia.com/Oblivion/OB-mods.htm. There are some links to feminine armors but not of the chain mail thong variety. I prefer Roberts body mods for both males and females and don't like some of the "survivalist" mentality mods, but Arwen has a great resource for high quality, lore friendly mods.

You can also try a tag-based search on TESNexus using the "Lore-Friendly" tag. Most (but not all) of those will probably meet your criteria.

Any of the house mods by Emma will blend into the game.

Ruined-Tail's Tale is a good quest/companion mod.

Finally there is Companion Vilja. She'll change your experience with the game and fit right in (unless you're planning an evil marauder or assassin style character). [Disclaimer: According to Emma I'm now a co-author, but really I just add some scripting and other support features. Emma's the one who brings Vilja to life with such a charming personality.]

Ah, an Oblivion player after my own heart.

Hm. Well, I've some bookmarks that might prove handy. In addition to one for Arwen's site, that is (good call!) And yes, other than TESNexus category browsing (with tags optional) or advanced search, in either case sorting the results as you like. Anyway, here we go...

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1053088-deltes-thread-of-immersion-mods/
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1004917-list-daggerfallesque-mod-list
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/931523-roleplay-replay-a-randomly-generated-job-mod-list/

And of course, the http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1010109 (probably has links to all of the above, among other things ;)). So, just a few hightlights (I think), and well, the motherlode too.

Another thing I tend to do is, once I find a mod I like, check out others by the same modder. A simple procedure, but one that's yielded some fantastic and on occasion surprising results, for me.

A set of mods that I don't see linked very often would have to be the mods made by Nernie, such as the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22834 (word of warning, though, the v2 version with the shack addon seems to be the wrong version of the mod; use the v2 no shack version instead).

Nernie's mods fit into the game perfectly, IMHO.

I am probably the wrong person to ask, since I think that pretty much every mod I have installed (190 mods), fits perfectly with the universe. Although, realistically, hidden within that content is no doubt exceptions.

I would ask, what oblivion mods DON'T feel cohesive.

I would ask, what oblivion mods DON'T feel cohesive.

G-Strings that grant a 1 or more armor rating
Everyone having ginormous briasts
lightsabers
machine guns
NPCs of certain races that speak perfect English.
Obviously wrong, or made up lore
Any mods that add stuff like Sephiroth and Chocobos
references and phrases not present in the game's world (like someone one saying: "Oh my God!", or meantiong earth and othersuch mistakes like that)
Modern architecture
etc.

With a lot of these you can get away with it by making it right, having it be a subtle joke or pop culture reference(For an example of how not to be subtle look at Kragenier's Death Quest.), and/or by using the excuse of: "Dewemer/Sheogorath/Magic/alternate universe did it." Like guns and Flying ships can exist if properly integrated into the lore by Dwemer-izing them. (ie: steam punk type guns and ships)

but, yeah... most mods aren't completely crazy to the point of detracting from the game... I have seen some pretty lame stuff though. Like replacing most of the dungeon enemies with half naked women, quest mods starting with big rants by the mod authors, quest mods starting with screwing up your weather and giving some lame credits scene, the immediate pop-ups that even bethesda did... can't think of much else. I usually only take chances and try to give unknown mods a chance when it comes to quest mods, I'm a little more careful with gameplay mods.

Anyway my generic copy/paste has my general suggestions and stuff and none of it is stuff like that:

Have you played Oblivion already?
What sort of things interest you?
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?)
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.)
When did you leave?
What did you not like about Oblivion? What did Oblivion not have or need more of?
Male or female character?
