Where is my load-order saved?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:07 am

I have a complete backup of my bethesda/oblivion directory, and of my oblivion folder in the Users directory(where the save-games are located). I recently installed it all on a new computer, and it was running fine, but I upgraded Wrye Bash and accidentally hit the "BOSS" icon, which apparantly automatically resets your load-order. I've tried everything, but all my saves still CTD, so I want to revert to the old load order before I updated Bash. I've tried replacing all the files in the Users/.../oblivion folder, and the entire "Mopy" folder in my Bethesda/Oblivion directory, but the new load-order still comes up. What gives? What file or files do I need to replace to get my old load-order back?

You can use the load order from an old saved game in the saves Tab of Wrye Bash.

I can't, for the life of me, find this feature. I found the option to "load masters" for particular saves, but not one that will set the load-order.

All you need do is go the the SAVES tab and highlight a save made when you were running the "old" load-order. There is a window on the right that lists that save's load-order. It shows two load orders acatully... the current one plus the one you want.

I see the window, but I don't see any option to change the load order. The only way I would know how to change it would be manually, which, with hundreds of esp's, will take quite some time.

Concerning the root of your problem:

Sounds as if you don't want BOSS to automatically handle your load order. There are several solutions to this.

The one I use is effective and only a tad cumbersome. I indeed use BOSS religiously for ADVICE on how to arrange my load-order (amongst other things). But I too do not let it manipulate things on its own. Instead, I created a special folder on another partition named "Oblivion BOSS data folder". There I keep a copy of every ESM and ESP in my actual Oblivion\data folder. (No other files are needed.) That is also where BOSS resides. Whenever I install or uninstall a mod I place a copy of its esm/esp in the Oblivion BOSS folder. I then run BOSS, which rearranges the special folder but doesn't touch actual game folders. I then use the BOSS printout (web page now) to adjust my load-order as I see fit. This works quite well, and in addition provides a backup of your esms and esps. Just remember to update it periodically so it contains the latest versions of everything.

The latest version(s) of BOSS allow to you set up overrides so that you can tell it you use your preferred load-order rather than its own. This can take a while to set up if you have a lot of disagreements, but once established doesn't need to be altered unless you choose to.

Turns out BOSS wasn't causing the CTD's, but a setting in the bashed patch. I was trying to use skeletal animations that I didn't have. Thanks for the help. It turns out the only way I could find to revert to the old load-order, was to paste all the old esp's back in, since the time-stamp on them is what sets the load-order, but since I got it to work with BOSS, I'll stick with the new order.

The only problem I'm having now is some continuous sound-effect, looping over and over. I can run from it, and it gets more faint, but always catches up. It almost sounds like machinery, like what you hear when you stand near the mill, in Unique Landscapes, above Cheydinhal. I hear it every time I go outside. Inside, I hear something looping, but it's like the sound is cut off after a split second, on each loop. Any ideas there?

That's probably caused by an AoE effect that should be silent/invisible but is altered by some mod. You can fix it via the UOP's ingame menu: startquest uop.

What is AoE? I've tried this fix, and none of the UOP options fix the problem. It seems to go away when I'm on horseback. The more I listen to it now, it sounds like a spell...like a hollow, echoing, ghostly effect.

Edit: Fixed, thank you. I had to move the script effect silencer esp to the end of the load list.
