I wish for longer, more challenging quests

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:07 am

I would love to see more drawn out, epic quests in Skyrim which are completely seperate from the main quest/faction arcs. Similar to Oblivion's 'Pale Pass' and the Ayleid collector one. If they include more
of these demanding yet rewarding quests from the inhabitants themselves, I would certainly be extremely happy. I'd much rather, in fact have less quests which have more bite and branch into others than more
quests overall with little depth.

Anyone else agree?

No, I don't agree fully. I want more quests as well as challenging ones.
Actually, if Skyrim has even less quests than Oblivion, I will be disappoint. :sadvaultboy:

Well technically the quest Pale Pass was in Skyrim, not Cyrodill, so it can be safe to assume that similar challenging quests will also be in Skyrim.

Pale Pass was a bit disappointing. I mean, it sounds like a whole journey but each landmark is like 15 seconds apart.

FNV did an outstanding job with quests... totally blew F3 out of the water.

nearly everyone had some kind of job for you.. and tonnes of variety from fetching some ingredients, investigating a disturbance, scaring off some goons, scoring drugs, raiding a cave/building, looking for missing persons, even teaching NPC's some skills.

Everyone on the dev team should play FNV for atleast 50 hours.

This.

The diary certainly indicated a much more difficult journey. I think just injecting the possibility of getting lost between landmarks would have made it more interesting.

Length is important, but challenge is moreso. There are more ways to make the game harder than buffing enemies.

I feel the same.
Me and my friends had a talk about Difficulty in games recently, actually. Some games take effort in difficulty, and others just get lazy about it.
Sometimes, a game will add special mechanics to increase challenge, but most of the time a developer will just say "F*** it." and mess with the numbers until it seems "Easier" or "Harder"

I'd like a good mix of quests with different lengths and challenges. I wouldn't want to see side/faction quests sacrificed for a longer main quest, on many of my previous TES game playthroughs I didn't bother with the main quest at all (finally got around to doing the MW main quest last year!), and I hope I am able to do the same in Skyrim. But a wide variety including several longer quests and many shorter quests would keep everyone happy*, surely?

*I realise that in video-game-land this is a hope in vain!

I think that the ultimate heist (or whatever it is called, it has been like a year since I played that) was a pretty good one, also it is the longest quest in Oblivion
the alyied quest just made me mad becuase I could not find it, same with the nirnroot
I actually never went back and asked him where they were, I just searched every single ruin

A successor to Umbacano would be nice, "I want a bunch of things, only know where half of them are. Oh, you're back, I have another long and complicated job for you."

I agree with OP completely. While I deeply enjoyed conquering every single side-quest in Oblivion and Morrowind, I did have the idle thought that I was wishing that they were longer quests...

I have no doubt that Bethesda will give us exceptionally crafted quests (both Main quest as well as side-quests), but if they had to give us less quests to ensure longer duration and deeper plot twists, then I would rather have that than have quests I could rip out in five minutes.

I wouldn't say I want "longer" or "more challenging" quests, but I certainly want the devs to put more thought into the quests (yeah I know "Dynamic Story" should solve this, assuming it's as dynamic as they boast). But even with DS they still need to think out the nuts and bolts of the quest. Sure the location of point B can change to somewhere you haven't been but it's the same basic quest. So, my suggestion: no more (or much, much less) of this Oblivion "Get quest at point A. Go to point B. Kill some baddies. Get item x. Kill more baddies. Return to point A."

And I want a game that will take me 15 years to beat all the quests because there's so much uber quality content, also I want this game to be the standard retail price and take only 4 years to make.

Yes, but more importantly quests that are connected to each other. That's one thing Oblivion did better than Morrowind IMO, for example with the later Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quests. It gives narrative cohesion to a faction, and a much better sense of actual progress.

Also, quests that have several different outcomes (depending on more subtle factors than merely "mission accomplished" vs. "quest giver died"), which might influence later events in the world.

Id like a quest to kill some monsters then you find evidence they are directed by some randomly generated frindge group and you can storm thier temp fort and fight them and THAT leads to info on who set the whole thing up and eventualy you can go and kill some high up person who was behind it all.. all having NOTHIING to do with the main quest just greed and power.
