[WIPZ] Mr Bear's Elemental Magic (with video!)

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:21 pm

Hi guys,

I have only just released my first mod, Ramshackle Armory, but my second is well on its way!

(NOTE: I explain everything I am about to write in the video linked below. This text is more or less for people with slow connections, at work, or with a severe phobia of youtube.)

http://mysteriousprojects.tumblr.com/upcomming/

The idea for Elemental magic comes from early thoughts about Skyrim and the contextual magic system alot of people were talking about. Swapping out one spell for a similar one every five minuets is one of my few gripes about oblivion (particulaly because alot of my characters are mages), that and the fact that an end-game character has five ranged lightning spells that do the EXACTLY the same thing but to a differnt degree. Also, I didn't like the fact that all the offensive spells were essentially the same- damage health, fire damage, shock damage- who cares when all you get is a differnt colour of magic blob to sling at people? Well, Elemental Magic aims to offer something more interesting, exciting and uesful!

Each spell unlocks new uses as you grow in power that can be activated with differnt button combinations- with one spell you can stagger an opponant with a gust of wind, blow them away with gale force, pull them close or even lift them in the air and slam them down! The very same spell can use all of these functions in an AOE spell to- six functions with one spell! (see how this works in the video above.) More spells will be added to cast lightning down upon people, burn them in the sun, drain light from your surroundings to hide, convert fatigue to magicka or health, boost strength or speed to superhuman levels, teleport yourself and friends around the provinence or create all powerful lightning storms that stay in the air electrocuting those unlucky enough to be caught in them! All of these spells will be fully leveled- with their effects and cost depending on what your chi level is....

Chi is the new magic system I have introduced for EM. Your chi level will increase as you play and level up, and factors in player level and willpower amongst other things. By using one of the new spells, you channel Elemental Power from the enviroment through you and into the form of whatever you are trying to do. This however exausts you, sometimes to the point of collapse- casting these spells drains fatigue. These makes using these spells a very tactical experience- used correctly and they can tip vastly uneven odds, over use them and you will collapse from the strain and lie defencless as your opponants slowly finish you off.

EM is a work in progress, but a good lot of figuring things out is allready done and it won't be too long before you can add these powers to your oblivion world. However, I have spells to script, quests to write, and undoubably, bugs to fix- and more important than anything, I have exam week in a month! This makes it hard to put a release date down on paper (or screen), but it is almost certain it will be after my exams.

Keep track of things with to the minute updates from my website, http://www.mysteriousProjects.tumblr.com!

EDIT: WHOA, STOP PRESS: PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE!

I have spent the day working on a new effect, weather manipulation. It alows you to control the weather, and harness the climate to cause damage or buffs... all in the same contextual, leveled, and streamlined way as the other powers. I hope you'll be impressed with the suprsiing amount of stuff I've managed to cram into this one allready, and it's only half done!!

Dont be intimidated by the 7 minute length, the actuall gameplay is about 4 mineuts long, the rest is just me showing off sound effects because You can really hear them...

More info to come, hopefully.... Enjoy!

Following up on the acronym of MM...BRA ;), you should call your mod "Just In - Mr. Bear's Elemental Awesome Magic", or JIM BEAM for short.

Hahah acronyminator

This looks really cool, nice job on the incredibly elegant design of the mechanics! I'll definitely be trying this out whenever I move on to PHASE III of my glacially slow first playthrough(s) and install mods that affect gameplay and balance (I have very specific plans, you see!). I was of course setting my sights on the popular established magic mods, but the simplicity and ELEGANCE of your mod will make it the first magic mod I try out when I get to PHASE III and do a game with non-vanilla balancings.

This sounds epic! I'll be watching this one for sure. The effects sound pretty exciting and entertaining in both form and function. Slam in particular looks fantastic, you can definitely tell you spent alot of time on that! The Chi system sounds great for a monk or psion(mind mage) role-player as well, and the fatigue drain causing an eventual collapse is an excellent penalty for over-extension. Good luck with this one, if you need any beta testers, I'd be willing.

Thanks guys! Leold, I'll be sure to get in touch :) My last mod needed two beta testers and that was half the (planned) size, so any help will be welcomed!
And palidoo, thanks man! :D I did indeed spend alot of time scripting these things. I'm guessing that the Windbending power alone is 400 lines of code, and is involved with over 9 spells- so it's good to know that it comes across as elegent. And Im guessing your doing what I'm gonna do- give oblivion it's send off with a vanilla play through, a lightly modded playthrough, and a crazy modded playthrough :P Have fun!

Wow, that looks really cool! I noticed that little problem with fall damage in the vid. One possible fix would be to use the SetNumericGameSetting function of OBSE to temporarily change fJumpFallTimeMult to zero (just remember to change it back). This will prevent the PC from taking fall damage, but won't stop the PC from yelling in pain. Just an idea.

Keep up the good work! This is definitely something I'll be keeping an eye on.

A good idea! Its weird, I hadn't had that problem in previous takes. If its a big issue though I'll code that in- it just seems a bit risky incase the script stops for one reason or another and it never gets turned back.

Thanks for the encouragement! Hopefully there will be more too see soon :D

Looks interesting. Almost like a deady reflex system for magic, at least with the combination of keys pressed and stuff. Anxious to see some more videos. Keep up the good work

Haha, thanks :D I actually did the same with MM - added all of the powers to do with rock and earth to my character, and other such elemental powers :D

thanks man! If I made anything half as game-changing and nearly as popular as DR5 I would be very surprised tbh :P Still, you never know!

More videos may be on the way soon- the bus didn't arrive for my first day back, so I'm going to spend some of the time I have working on a new power. Which one to choose, which one to choose.... :S
