[RELz] ZuTheSkunk's Shivering Isles Overhaul v0.1

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:47 pm

PS2: This is pretty much frustrating - my mod has NO attention on the PES, and small attention on the TesNexus. Despite the fact that it does quite a bit. Makes one wondering what is the point of creating anything at all.

If all people thought like that, human culture would be lacking some of its greatest masterpieces, which were not so appreciated in their time. The thing is, people mod a game because they like it, not because they expect recognition. There will be the odd ones who expect and get it, but the only reason you should need to mod is liking to mod.
Heck, just sort the mods in Nexus per download count, I'm sure there are plenty with a lower count that yours, from authors who don't really care too much about it. You and them decided to share your work and ideas through your mods, and even if no one appreciates it, it is a contribution to making this game better through the creativity and passion of the people who enjoy it.

Zu,
I too was disappointed at the lack of attention my first two mods received (BEAR and Open All the Gates, which at last check were both well under 400 unique downloads even though they've been available since September); and at first it looked like WEPON was going to head the same way. But then WEPON managed to reach fifth place on TESNexus' "hot 5 mods" list and its popularity exploded. In retrospect, I think publicizing its existence here, on TESNexus, on Planet Elder Scrolls, on UESP, and on TESAlliance, as well as putting together a bunch of cool screenshots for it, all on the first day of launch, were what made the difference. (My Marketing experience at work!)

I complained a number of times on these forums about the lack of attention for these three mods, to the point that my posts devolved into whining. But then someone - I do not remember who - pointed out that the best mods frequently are not the most popular ones. For example, the Top 25 Mods list on TESNexus currently is dominated by entries such as "Hentai Lovely House", "Claudia's Little Secret" and "sixy Oblivion Overhaul". If people like that sort of thing, okay, but they're not what I would call high quality adds to Oblivion :) Meanwhile, some of the best mods I use, like Wizard's Spell Book, garner almost no attention.

All I can do, then, is try to offer a little encouragement and hope that it doesn't sound as shallow as it did when I received it. Your Overhaul is an awesome mod which, especially considering how much work it represents, just is not getting the attention it deserves. Additionally, I would recommend redoubling your efforts to publicize your mod - more people need to know about it! A good start would be to put a link to it in your signature, or possibly even setting up a website devoted to it...

Regarding not answering your questions: I apologize, as this oversight was not intentional. I was bombarded with messages when WEPON first came out, and despite my best efforts was not able to respond to everyone. I do not recall your question on the Durable weapons. Were you wanting to use WEPON's Durable weapon records in your Overhaul? Or was the question regarding how the player is allowed to obtain those weapons?

EDIT: I fully agree with what migck says above as well.

I hear ya Zu, my mod JLLO has 240 unique downloads on the nexus, despite so many people asking for it on Vvardenfel Imports page XD
But its worth it for the small amount of people who love it. Look at this way, mod for yourself and if anyone else enjoys it then good for them :)

Yeah. I can see it quite often, and not only here, but also in the general gaming industry. And I can't say it's motivating...

the only reason you should need to mod is liking to mod.

And I do like modding. If my work slowly becomes something that I consider to be good, then it makes me feeling that I have some value, that I can do good, worthwhile things. But if no one appreciates my work, then well, that feeling disappears. And it happens too easily in my case. I'm generally a pessimistic one...

I would recommend redoubling your efforts to publicize your mod

Well, it surely would help, yes. But I'm not good at it, I don't know much sites related to TES, and currently I'm too much in pessimistic "oh, who cares" mood to do so. (And it appears that I'm quite often in this mood...)

I do not recall your question on the Durable weapons. (...) was the question regarding how the player is allowed to obtain those weapons?

Yes, that's what I wanted to know by that time.

***

Anyway, thank you for the good word about my work, I do appreciate it. ;)

Well Zu, it looks like you, I and John all have some fans :)

In all seriousness, though, please do not let one mod's reception bother you too much; as long as you enjoy the modding, that's all (in my opinion) that matters. And if you stop with one mod, the community will suffer as a result. I nearly stopped modding when BEAR took over a month to have 100 downloads, while a similar but less advanced mod received ten times the attention (and still does). After all, BEARrepresented over 200 hours of work. If I had stopped then, WEPON probably would not exist now.

To answer your question, belatedly, on how the player can obtain durable weapons in WEPON:
Spoiler
Players have access to Durable Amber and Madness weapons as soon as the player has become Sheogorath. He or she just needs to return to Dumog or Cutter, and they will say a unique line about the Amber or Madness Ore being "purified" or strengthened due to Jyggalag's departure. It is not possible to upgrade existing weapons, however, which was a conscious design choice. We may also add durable armor in the future.
This discussion also has a bearing on future WEPON development, but I won't give many details here:
Spoiler
Some people have noticed entries for "Chaos" weapons in the WEPON ESP file...

lets see now...yes theres a conflict with the face/eye thing with Integration, i checked...googly eyes whatever....in a constant state of eyes rolled over in their heads...after first it was integration then i got integration working right and it reversed to your mod doing it....it was a mess to get it to that point even....as for Giskard's stuff from what i've seen unless i am terribly wrong >_> his was never finished especially not Shivering Isles (he's the Curp maker...right, which means they'll never be finished which annoys me...especially since he's got atleast one bug in it.) and i am pretty sure there'd be some kind of conflict you both have things that mess with the creatures that live in the isles....

2 things i noticed, i coudn't get further on the demensia side experiencing the flavors of madness Mazada ignored me....i cheeted....got farther....not sure if that was ment to happen now...was i supposed to talk to Kithlan instead or something.... and 2 At level 35 there were creatures i litterally along with a atleast 3 golden saints...or Mazken couldn't kill...ie i couldn't litterally damage them...and most of these were ordered saints or Mazken though i couldn't hurt jiggy either....

where did you get the idea for the ordered Saints and seducers....technically i don't know that they'd be canon as it were....simply because both are Deadra and Knights of Order or more like gollums that never quite.....while Jiggy is gaining power he wouldn't be strong enough yet in my opinion by the time you see them to effect regular Daedra atleast so far as to turn them into creepy weird things....though i might add Integration supports the idea of it being possible...which i find funny...

there are atleast 2-3 things i'd like to see with the Shivering isles just to make it seem more real...one these towns...need walls these people are insane not stupid....there's dangerous creatures out there...Demented people aren't stupid their paranoid...which is all the more reason for walls, and the Manic people maybe druggies but their also artists which means they'd build walls too...flamboyant less then the best walls mind you but still...
And Sheogorath claims to care about his people yet do we see Mazken and Aureals in any of these towns...even though after, and before the crisis he/me has the manpower...and the Aureals/Mazkin live half-days walk from the Fringe...how'd they get there in time to stop it from completely being overun...and i mean completely...if there wasn't some kind of presence...

3. like like to be able to populate the finge with some of these cookoos from Tamriel....or convert...some of the populace...(the non quest related anway...it'd be funny)...you've got two right at the gate....the kajiit whom you 'can't' see, and the guard...and you didn't even have to do anything with him...maybe make temperary housing out of the ruins (partially fixed(like part of the first level or the surface area) of Zedifen...i'd also like to be able to see the people whom just spontainously disappear....the bone guy for instence...(don't know if you kept him or not, i've not seen him since) not disappear...i did like that you allowed me to keep the everscamp stick XD...and as always MORE godly powers (or ways of getting) for Sheogorath, also his plane is the madhouse but we're in the shivering isles...what happened to the rest...did it get conquered by Jiggy, which could lead to a war of conquest or such for you XD
