Bethesda Answers Why Skyrim Won't Have Co-Op

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:15 am

Just found this article posted about 4 hours ago on the co-optimus website.

'It's not wrong or unreasonable for people to want to experience a game with their friends, or want to do things with folks online. There's nothing wrong with that at all. What we've tried to do is help people understand that in game development, it's all about trade-offs. One of our mantras here is that you can do anything - you just can't do everything.

So certainly we could do multiplayer. Unquestionably. It's not a thing we're technically incapable of figuring out. But when we draw up the list of things we'd like to have cut or change in order to support that feature, what we end up with is unpalatable. It'd make a lesser version of the game. And there is no doubt on the dev side that that is the case."

There's a thread for multiplayer discussion. I'd provide a link, but i'm on my phone just for a moment.

Nothing really that new. I don't ever recall reading an actual quote of them saying so, but I think it was pretty obvious that this was the case for a really long time.

What with Valve - a developer that I thought was a bastion of single player - saying that they probably won't have an isolated single player experience in one of their games again...

Well it's just nice to know that at least BGS still knows what's up.

This is pretty much the argument those of us in the anti-multiplayer crowd have been making for ages. Maybe now that the reasoning is confirmed by a dev, people will settle down on the topic.

One example I can think of is Fable 2. That co-op was tacked on and almost unusable. I'm glad they'd rather make the best single player experience they can. I'm sure if their team grows to a point where they can support co-op without sacrificing the single player experience, they'll reconsider it. Until then, let the modders deal with it.

No offense to anyone in particular, but these forums have generally convinced me that I don't want to play co-op with any you guys anyway.

And don't tell me I'm the only one. I'm just saying what we are all thinking :P
