Tusk candles

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:01 pm

So in a few of the screenshots we can see tusk-candles (like in the recent one with the khajiit: http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/KhajiitTemple.jpg) What I'm wondering is, what are those tusks from? Surely they're not dragon teeth, as I doubt there are many in Skyrim who can take down dragons aside from Dovahkiin. I don't remember seeing any beasts in the trailer or other screens that they could obviously be from, nor do I remember any monsters in Oblivion or Morrowind that had tusks. Are there going to be sabertooth tigers in Skyrim or woolly mammoths or something along those lines? Also, will the tusks be loot from certain enemy types, that we can sell or do our own crafting with? I don't know, but I'd imagine gamesas have thought it through and there's probably a reason they're there. What do you think?

Honestly they look more like horns. They look very similar to the mead drinking horn I bought in Sweden. Probably just a horn of a mammal that is then filled with wax, that is my guess.

This. Been confirmed for awhile.

In fact, Todd even says that you'll see a mammoth at E3.

Yup, I'd guess those were saber tooth tiger teeth though. Unless Mammoths aren't very mammoth.

They are too big to be saber tooth teeth, unless the tigers are giant in the game.

Yeah, I think it's pretty awesome too! I've said this before, but I hope to see other ice-age themed animals too. Seems fitting to me, but I'm sure these two were used because they're very recognizable from that era.

Honestly they look more like horns.

They do have black tips at the end. Maybe a cow horn or a goat's.

I believe there is a piece of concept art that contains a mammoth.

Actually, I went and found it. Here it is: http://d2vcblkey4a3r8.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/skyrim-concept_art_01-1024x744.jpg

Yeah, it's dead, but you get the point.

Wow you guys are sharp, I didn't hear about mammoths or sabertooths getting confirmed. Sweet news

I still wonder if those tusks will be valuable loot, probably will

As stated earlier, these 'tusk candles' are probably animal horns filled with wax and a wick. After all, it would be easy to make without making a mess and the horns could be refilled with wax and a new wick once it runs out.

Animal horns like the ones from cows and goats are hollow, but tusks just wouldn't do as those are not hollow and it would be a tedious task to hollow them out.

In my opinion it's a pretty ingenious way to fill animal horns with wax for use as a lightsource that don't make messy wax stains on the floor, furniture or drip on your head :)
