Graphics Card for Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:53 am

Woah... Rogue, Vice, and Worm, you almost lost me there for a moment. Actually, I think you did...

Well, how can I tell what my native resolution is?'

Edit: My current resolution happens to be 1600x900.

I've been looking for a graphics card also. Someone recommended me http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130587&cm_re=gtx_580-_-14-130-587-_-Productcm_mmc=BAC-MaximumPC-_-BOTB-_-NA-_-NA&nm_mc=ExtBanner and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161366

Is the 2nd one really worth $200 more? Or should I just go with the cheaper one?

I would go with the 580 unless you need to play the game on some insane resolution like 5048 x 1080, etc.

The GTX 580 (or even the 570) should be more than powerful enough to handle any new games over the next few years at 1920x1080 or even 1900 x 1200, including DX11, and if you want to later, you can add a second identical card.

If you plan to game on 2 or 3 HD monitors together, not sure, perhaps someone else can comment on that as I've never tried it.

Well, in that case, 1600x900 is my native resolution, because it is the maximum.

They're both pretty overkill. You'd be fine at max settings with a gtx 480. Unless, of course, you are running at an insane resolution or just never want to have to upgrade again.

Actually, now that I think of it, you could probably get by fine witha 460.

that depends on what you want your gaming experience to be.

are you going to be 3d gaming? gaming on multiple monitors? extremely high resolutions aka higher than 1920x1080? going for a stable consistent 60fps maxed out? or fine with 30+

because unless your gaming on multiple monitors at high ass resolutions i dont see much point in a 6990

Agreed. I'm running Oblivion and Fallout 3 at a resolution of 1920 x 1200 with high settings using just an 8800GT. And according to the benchmarks I've seen the 460 will smoke my 8800GT. So he should have no problem having Ultra-High settings with even the highest resolution. And the 460 will probably cost half of what the 580 goes for. Of course if he has the money to burn he may as well go for the better card, but in that case I'd say go for top of the line. The 460 though is a very good compromise between cost and power right now.

Assuming 1600 x 900 is his native resolution, he'd probably be fine with a 768mb card.

The difference in pricing right now is so nominal i could never in good conscience recommend anything less than 1gb DDR5 for that will remain viable for at least 2-3 years. I would consider anything less to be outdated honestly. Shell out the extra 50$ you'll be glad you did.

Please don't laugh. I use an xbox, but would an hd radeon 4650 work at all?

If you go with AMD, the cheapest GPU that seems to work reasonably well for DX11 games is the desktop HD 5770 card. (around $120 or so)

the NVIDIA GTX 460 is considerably faster and a bit more expensive

Depends on what else you got under the hood and how much vram it has. IIRC that is a 512m card so barring very low RAM(2gig or less) and a single core processor you should be able to run low-med. Oblivion is a good indicator, if you can run OB on med chances are very good you can run Skyrim on med.

The Radeon 4000 series are all DirectX 10 cards, DirectX 11 isn't implemented until the 5000 series, 400 for Nvidia. And by the sounds of it Skyrim will be using at least some DirectX 11 features. So that card won't be that great of an investment, and chances are you'll need to upgrade again once you come across a future game that uses only DirectX 11. There'll be a crossover for awhile yet but eventually DirectX 10 will become obsolete. And yes, it is only a 512 meg card. It won't be long before games will require at least 1 gig of VRAM. It's quickly becoming the standard, and even games that only require 512 will run better with more memory. Especially the games that Bethesda produces. Having 1 gig of VRAM will go a long ways towards reducing the stuttering that occurs in all of their titles.

Considering that the Graphic Philosophy for this game was to look good on all three platforms I'm not worried.

No Dx11 really.

Performance increase is NOT Bethesda, It's Dx11 being 100 times better than dx9. No cool Tess or shaders from dx11. NO THANKS. I'll play a game from a dev that still realizes PCs and consoles are 2 different worlds. Shameful. When morrowind came out "Look at the water effects" When Oblivion came out it was" Look at the forest and the draw distance" When skyrim comes out " Look at the 2001 direct x 9 shaders" Lol.

O my graphics card is a 6990, get that :D

I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card. Do you think this might be good enough for SR? If not, what should I get?

Personally, if I were you, I would upgrade to a GTX 460, it's the bottom line of DX11 cards and it will be able to play any game on highest settings if you have decent ram and processor.

Okay, so your only going to play DICE games? Good luck in your journeys, cya! Also, I'm not sure where you get the "no DX11", we have DX11.

I assume a Radeon HD6950 should handle the game fairly easily, yes?

Doubtful, I'd upgrade to a 7000 series card if I were you.

yeah i had a 8800gts 640mb card and couldnt max it completely unless i liked looking at crap 30fps constantly.

but there was performance tweaks that coulda usually solved alot performance issues, as well as some mods like the unofficial oblivion patch and some others...

the game required far too much work on the users end to get running perfectly to be considered worthy of anything more than the title of "Console Port"

though it made up for it by its endless mods and how huge the community was in response to all/most of the issues plaguing the game
