[REL] Ruined-Tail's Tale 3.0 - A Complete Rebuild

I played through this mod finally for the first time. It's the best companion mod I have ever seen for the two games: Oblivion and Morrowind. After playing through Ruin-Tail's tale, I must confess I felt that the game was done for me and started a new Oblivion Game. It was a very well done mod, frustrating in certain parts, but very well done. I played through the Romance line since it seemed logical at the time. How could I refuse an Argonian who is honest with his feelings?

The mod is a love story, pure and simple. I wish more mods like Ruin Tail and Viconia could be made.

From what I've played so far, I love this mod. Endearing character indeed.

However I can't continue atm, because when I drop the assassin's letter near the Arena and the Shadowscale comes to talk to me...and when I agree to travel with him to the Stronghold...the games crashes. I'd like to know why and how I might be able to fix this.

It's been a really fun mod so far, and I don't want to have to end the story there.

Hi,

I'm at the following part: (from the walkthroug)

Say your farewells and watch as Ruin retreats to the altar, and sets both of his bodies alight, burning to ashes. (This scene can get kind of laggy on some computers. If you find it is laggy, just leave the cell (back into the Training Halls) and wait for a quest update to relieve you of the lagginess.)

when Ruin walks back to the Altar, i can't move and when he gets he just stands still and nothing happens. His body doesn't go up in flames or something like that. How can I solve this?

Hmm... a problem...
Ruin left me, I found him in Cheydinhall, we fought the asassins, I got the message he will translate the letter we found in one of the dead assassins... no development whatsoever many weeks later.
Ruin has no new topics, I don't get any update.
I know we have to go to Anvil but don't I have to be told by Ruin about this?

Mod conflict?
Should I put RTT.esp further down?
In my load order I have FCOM_Ruin.esp, should I kep it or it was redundant?

Any advice?

Afaik FCOM_Ruin is an old compatibility patch that was not to be installed after RTT 3.0 release.

Wow. Ruin is quite the talkative character, isn't he? I met him at level 1, and by the time I was ready to advance to level 2, he had already started a conversation about some of his deep thoughts 8 times! It's no surprise that my poor Bosmer nightblade was more than a bit overwhelmed by all those philosophical attacks on his notions... he had just escaped from the Imperial Prison, hasn't yet made any quests of any major consequence, and this Argonian already calls him a hero whose path is filled with moral dilemmas he supposedly hasn't considered yet. I have a feeling my poor Bosmer came across as quite the optimistic dimwit in those conversations... but what can you do when you only want to repair your companion's armor, and he engages you in a debate on how society shapes your perception of good and evil, completely out of the blue :)

Anyway, here's a little story of the first hours with Ruin, along with a couple of other mods. I might sound harsh, but I actually quite enjoyed the mod, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

So here is Fanthir (my character), overwhelmed by all those thoughts Ruin has been brooding over. What makes it even worse is that he hasn't been able to get a good full night's sleep since he got out of that Imperial Prison... philosophy and a tired and exhausted mind don't really go well together. But Fanthir himself is also to blame - he's but a novice of the arcane arts, and yet he's already so eager to try his magic abilities that he uses spells that are a little bit over his head. So not only is he tired, but he's also using spells that slowly destroy his body and mind*, with little regards of the consequences. It doesn't help that the priests in the Church never seem to have time to help out my poor tormented Bosmer**.

Finally, Fanthir decides he should finally find an Inn and get some rest. His body and mind are literally devastated by his magical experiments, but that will have to wait until the next morning. He checks in at the Wawnet Inn, wishes Ruin a pleasant night and goes to bed, treating himself to a couple of hours of sleep... or so he thinks. After only one hour, he is awoken by the sounds of footsteps. Ruined-Tail is nowhere to be found, all he left Fanthir is a diary... but there's no time to think about that now because a heavily armed knight with a grim face is approaching Fanthir's bed! He introduces himself as Sir Pellew*** and is looking for a great hero with a bounty on his head. "Wait, what?! I just ascended to level 2, and I haven't done anything wrong!", Fanthir thinks. Well, that doesn't impress Sir Pellew, he attacks Fanthir and by the Nine is he strong. There's just no way Fanthir can beat that monster! Unless... it might mean his death, but there's a certain, very potent Fire spell he can do. There's no other way. He casts it, but Sir Pellew simply reflects it. Great, now Fanthir is burning. Luckily, that's not too effective, however the spell's backlash is tiring him rapidly. There might just be enough time for another try... he casts it again, and this time he can actually harm Sir Pellew! The knight surrenders. Does that mean Fanthir can go back to sleep now?
Heck no, because now Sir Pellew is engaging him in a philosophical debate about what it means to be a hero, and where that may come from and such.

Apparently, a drowsy exhausted magically tormented just-left-by-his-new-best-friend-who-was-also-quite-the-inquisitor burning Bosmer's replies to his accusations disappoint Sir Pellew greatly, as he shakes his head multiple times at the portrayed ignorance, before he leaves with a last, shattering remark that Fanthir should really learn something about his past before he calls himself a hero.

A hero. Heard that a couple of times now in the last few hours since Ruin joined him as a companion. Ruin! "Oh, Ruin, why did you leave? We only just met last eveni.." are Fanthir's last thoughts, mixed with some confused answers and questions about philosophy, ethics, society and his own past, before he drops his dagger, sinks to his knees (luckily erasing the flames with that sudden movement), and after long last, succumbs to his weariness by falling face-down on the dirty wooden floor of his cheap inn room, for what will be a much-needed rest of about twelve (unskippable) hours.****

*) Sorcery's Toll by Picador lets you cast any spell if you have the magicka, but they damage your attributes (or even give you magical diseases) depending on their cost relative to your skill.
**) Losing My Religion by Cliffworms gives them very tough praying and teaching schedules, and the altars don't restore attributes anymore.
***) Tears of the Fiend!
****) Sorcery's Toll is actually really like that. You might end up losing insance amounts of Fatigue, and when your Fatigue is at -60000, it does take quite some time for you to recover from that.


This really happened like that, and when I saw Fanthir like that in the last shot (he survived, by the way, but by the time all his attributes where at about, umm, zero), and remembered all that had happened before, it just had to write it down. :D Figured it might serve as praise to Simyaz and his team - while I'm pretty sure those mods are not supposed to work like that (and are not supposed to coincide like that), it sure made a great story, and it definitely defined my view about my character. ^^

I get this weird lightning sound bug whenever I ride a horse. It is because Ruin's horse gets summoned when I ride as well. I have seen other topics discussing this, but don't see a solution listed? Any ideas regarding the cause? I tried installing Duke Patrick's script effect silencer, but it didn't help here...

Afaik FCOM_Ruin is an old compatibility patch that was not to be installed after RTT 3.0 release.

Hmmm... I don't know...
Removed the FCOM patch.
Started new char. Storyline went smoothly with many more updates of the quest. However, I reached the same place in the quest when I have to wait a few days for Ruin to decode the message.
A month later, after many battles the only thing he says to me is How are you, my friend? and nothing else.
Could it be load order? Some other mod overriding RTT?
I had similar problem with Arrows of the Ayleid King and dragging its esp almost to the bottom fixed the problem.
Should I try this? Or there is something else I forgot?

Is this the point in the storyline where Ruin joins you at the camp near Cheydinhal, and you get a coded letter?

If so, I got the next dialog from Ruin a couple or so days after that, when we were on our way to Anvil. I have my massive 254 mod LO sorted by BOSS (no special load ordering for me), and use the latest Ruin 3.0.1? without the FCOM patch.

Hi all,

I've just started playing with mods and I'm eager to play this one. However the lack of spoken dialogue is a turn off for me (no offense). I found a YouTube video where ruined tail had a voice, and in my opinion the voice work was quite good! Is there no voice acting in this newest version and, if not, would it be possible to cannibalize at least some of the voice files of an older version? Would it be as simple as loading them into the voice folder?
