Save the horses!

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:38 pm

I just read on IGN that Bethesda wants horses to be a "gameplay addition" and they might be yanked if it "makes the game better". Well, I just want to say that there is no possible way removing the horses will make the game better! Please let them in the game even if the only "gameplay addition" they bring is carrying the player from point a to point b. There is just something cool about riding a horse that makes me feel like Aragorn or some badass fantasy hero. Heck, in Oblivion I often rode to places I could fast travel to just to enjoy the scenery and the ride, and I explored every nook and cranny of Cyrodil on my trusted mount, something I probably wouldn't have bothered to do on foot even if I had a spell that made me faster than a horse. So please, pretty please, save the horses! I'll even pay 2 bucks for elven horse armor if that's what it takes... again!

I think what they mean is that they don't want horses in the game if they are as bad as the horse animations in Oblivion, and with games like Red Dead Redemption having really good horse graphics they don't want to put out something that is humiliating.

I don't think they will leave out horses in the game but I wouldn't mind as much as you if they did. Although it was quicker, if I was riding in Oblivion I tended to skip past dungeons and enemies whereas travelling on foot made me go through every dungeon and fight.

True, but this can prevent it from being frustrating. Rather than stiff animations, no smooth speed adjustments, no saddle bags and no mounted combat I prefer no mounts.

My main problem with horses in Oblivion was the lack of simple mounted combat, far to easy to end up with a tail with enemies chasing you, then you started to get mountain lions this was real fun as they was fast enough to follow the horse and dangerous enough to kill you or the horse easy to make things better you could have enemies at the target location to.

A mod for commanding the horse and one with saddlebags made horses useable. Yes the animations was a bit stiff but it was far down on my list of concerns, all four footed animals in Oblivion was stiff so an update here will benefit all of them.

As long as they're not stiff and don't feel like a tank when I'm controlling them, then yea, keep them in. Otherwise, don't; wastes precious time on other things Devs could be doing.

I could not bear the horses in Oblivion - they were so clumsy and unwieldy to use. (And, somehow, they svcked up a bunch of extra FPS. It was odd.)

(Of course, the third-person player animations were also terrible, just not as bad as the horses - at least you could still control yourself decently on foot, even though you looked awful doing it. Main reason why I'm always surprised when I hear someone say they actually played in 3rd person.)

It will make the game better if horses turn out bad in the end. Bethesda doesn't want to put something bad in the game, just for the sake of what it is.

A flawed thing can do more "damage" than it could if it wasn't even there.

Horses: The only thing so far I wouldn't miss.
I'd rather see them put development time into werewolves and vampires.

I Agree with this statement, horses i felt were a liability rather than an asset. I have some of my horses parked and unused at frostcag spire. However if they end up using horses in future games i would totally get a kick if we could swing swords, Shoot Bows, and especially use a Javlin while riding a horse.

I didn't use the horses in Oblivion, simply because my computer isn't very good! I found it was more laggy because it had to load quicker!

However, I plan on getting a new computer by the time Skyrim is released, so I'm all for horses being in the game

I haven't noticed them in any of the footage seen though...

I personally want this to see being worked on before 11/11/11:

- A bit better graphics, especially more advanced lighting and shaders.
- CLIMBING!
- MOUNTS!
- Sea monsters, if they aren't already in.

If horses lagged in Oblivion, could be because of sound issues with bad/old sound hardware. You could try the mod Quiet Feet MAX. Could help.
Or it could be because all creatures and NPCs were rendered horribly and lagged no matter what.

If you look close in the trailer, By the windmill, It shows a horse close to it, So could it mean they might be adding horses in game? :D *Crosses fingers*

Another problem with horses is that in games they often look silly.
Take Oblivion. Those werent horses, they were some sort of car that never needs fuel. Some sort of moving wooden horse. They couldnt possibly drop a 'horse apple' on the road, as their backside was just.. smooth. And they were all either female or had had a horrible accident.
If they can make horses look like horses, make them bend down to inspect a bit of grass when youve dismounted them, or tottter to a stream.. If they can make em so they automatically avoid a tree instead of running into it..
Yes, then Id like to see horses.
I dont want what is basically a moving toy horse as in Oblivion.

As long as the animations are fairly good I expect them to be in. Even if they're not perfect, they add a lot to the world. Even Oblivions horses, with their awful animations and broken mechanics, went in to making the world feel more natural and alive, seeing a forrester pass you on one and such.

For those who didn't like the horses in Oblivion or don't want horses in Skyrim unless they have this or that feature, it's simple: don't use them! There is no reason to cut them out altogether. Those who like them can enjoy them, and those who don't can steer clear. Win-win.

Standards have risen. Would be very bad rep for Bethesda to put flawed things in the game, just for the sake of them being there.

If a thing is bad in a game, people don't think "Oh! These horses svck! But it's there for some horse-fans that still love horses, despite them being so bad compared to everything else in the game! I totally understand that without anyone actually telling me!"

People think instead, generally "Eh.. what the heck? What kind of crap is this, compared to everything else? Didn't they have time to finish these horses or what? I'm definitely gonna mention this flaw in my Skyrim review on YouTube!"

Honestly, it has been done several times in gaming, some of them very effectively. I would like to see them in the game, for they add loads to the environment and the medieval setting. I won't complain if they're not in, but it's almost disconcerting that they can't get it to work even mildly properly. It doesn't have to be an integral part of the experience and technical showpiece, like in Red Dead Redemption. If Ocarina of Time got it pretty much right 13 years ago I can only imagine that whatever difficulties arise from the complexity of the environment shouldn't demand SO MUCH effort to adapt the mechanics to.
