[ALPHA] The Oblivion Centaur Project

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:27 am

Yeah, so the eventaul aim of mine is to have a centaur version for each armor set, and clothing sets......

One aim i have specifically outlined in this project was to not only make it playable, but to also make centaurs as playable and effective as human characters. For NPCs it might be alright to just not allow them to wear cuirasses and whatnot, but forcing that on the play hardly makes this a 'playable' race that people will really want to use. One of the most important things, and its something that has never changed in any version is not tamper with the upperbody mesh.....as that pretty mujch destory compatibility and using the premade torso items.

On some online games, I've seen most of the centaurs that are in it, aren't covered mostly on top (except the women of course), some wear hair adornments and the males wear helmets if in combat, but one thing I will say, their gait usually has their arms at 90 degrees and back and forth, like you would have your arms during a good jog, the females seem to have their arms out farther and do a more of a delicate swing than a jog run. But I've not seen any with dead arms (down at their sides), as if they're carrying a weapon, they'd need to hold it up anyways, so perhaps trying the animation that way. This way shields and such would just be "there" along with weapons. Also, a good suggestion for those who don't want to play the centaur but possibly tame one for a horse, horse variations could be a good thing to have.

GuruSR.

Edit: Typo and the spell check didn't see it (because it was a proper word).

The running aniamtion is one of the animations that have been fixed already. I was planning ot make a quick video to show that off ut havent had the time.

Althoguh I mentioned in the pre-alpha, Im not doing creature versions of the centaurs, however, the meshes/animations will work fine on a creature, so if anyone wants they can follow this tutorial n making ridable creatures: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Making_Ridable_Creatures

If anyone makes a ridable centaurs mod, just post about it here and I'll add it to the OP.

EDIT:
Dont expect the update to soon, I've just started back in my second year of university, and the next update is rather large and will be much closer to what I originally planned the alpha release to be.

if I may make a suggestion, i think you would gain a little room for armor and clothing if you just nudged the human waist part a bit forward. The centaurs you see in movies and art usually have the torso sitting in front of where their human legs would be, kind of creating the illusion of a seamless continuation of a horse's neck. In the current state of your mod the front of the horses neck looks like it's angled inward too much imo. http://i53.tinypic.com/2by8zk.jpg I manipulated to better illustrate my idea. (I'm using robert's body replacer mod)

What do you think?

I see what you mean and I completely agree, that does look much better. I'll add a mesh change for that to the update.

Well its been nearly a month....so I better update here.

There has been little to no progress since I last wrote in this thread, that is for two reasons.

1. I'm in my second year of university studying multimedia, during my downtime I've ben more inclined to play games rather then mod, so I just havent found the time.

2. A few weeks back I upgraded to windows 7, an aspect of this involved backing up my files (it wasnt much), however once I was done and installed windows 7, my external harddrive stopped working and I cant get to the latest Centaur files. Im sending it into the IT shop to see if they can recover things from it, but I wont get files from that for a fw weeks at least.

Like normal, this mod is taking a backseat to RL, dont expect anything from me for at least another fortnight.

This is amazing!

One question though. I'm working on a project called Vanilla Drops that aims to put hundreds of immersion "fixes" or additions into Vanilla Oblivion, not to change anything drastic about the gameplay or anything, but to add to it subtly and 100% lore-friendly! This has created a nice brainstorm in my head. If you ever finish this and I finish most of the work for Vanilla Drops, could I possibly use your mod to add a Vanilla Drops add-on to make a small centaur-village on the border of Valenwood?

Also you might want to try using the nord as a base on them rather than the imperial so their heads are bigger. Right now they kind of have a weird horse to man ratio. That and the Robert's Bodybuilder body would help.

The centaurs have always been created to be a resource, so you'll be able to use them. This is mainly because Im not interested in actaully developing a full mod for them, I'll just create them as a race.

Also you might want to try using the nord as a base on them rather than the imperial so their heads are bigger. Right now they kind of have a weird horse to man ratio. That and the Robert's Bodybuilder body would help.

I picked imperial because it is the standard human in the game, one of the changes in the next patch is ot actually make the horse half larger (from 0.8 to 0.9 scale), so if you think it looks out of proportion now it may look worse then.

if a user wants to use a body mod (such as Robert's Bodybuilder) then thats their choice, nobody quite yet has the ability to recreate fully custom body meshes, so I cant just set the upperbody to be a certain body mod. Even if I could I wouldnt, I dont use any body mods.

eck! Some bad news guys!

I finally copied all the work on my laptop over to my desktop, seems it was further out of date then I thought, I dont even have solf's horses or any of the new animations on it yet. :(

So this mod is offically stalled now until I find out if I can get my external drive recovered. I'll post again when I have some more info.

The file I have from when I was testing is dated 9/21/2010. Would it help if I uploaded that for you to check? Or is that too old too?

nah, I'd been through all my backups, the last one is dated just after the alpha went out, which is too old.

The laptop isnt complete scratch, it's still got the different colours to pick from, and the start of armors...its just missing Aliensolf's and mr skiia's meshes, along with a custom animation i had made.

Pretty much my parents keep forgetting to take the external to the IT shop when they go to the city....so it hasnt even been put in yet. SO screw that, Ill just re-do that work Im missing.
