I am SO out of touch!

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:53 pm

Now please nobody kill me...

I used to play a lot of this game but it's been a couple years since I've been in touch with the mod community. I tried to get back into it late last year but just didn't work out.

My question is where do i find the new great mods? Newest UOP? Best new graphics mod? Best Leveling Mod? And a good big quest mod or a collection of quests?

I know this is a newbie type thread but I feel like you should just treat me as such. Any and all help appreciated!

I'm in the same boat as you, I came on here and came across FCOM (huge compilation mod, the main thread is on this page) which I am currently in the process of installing (it's a beast of an install but I'm excited to get it going). Along with that I'll probably also get Oblivion Graphics Extender (which I used in the past) and maybe Better Cities and that should do it for me.

I think the best way to get back in touch is to
Browse through the first 5-10 pages of this forum and read up on any mods that catch your eye
Browse TESNexus by Recently Updated, and you'll see many of the current top mods which are actively supported and/or updated.

In addition, I suggest looking up mods by TheNiceOne, Tejon, Kyoma, Kuertee, Arthmoor, MythOfStrider, and Corepc. There's more than that, of course, but that'll give you a good start.

There have also been quite a few threads similar to this one in the past few weeks. Take a look through the first dozen pages or so and they should give you a good idea of what's currently popular. Not trying to be a [censored], you'll just find those threads quicker than people will respond to this one.

Not sure if this is nexus premium only, but search for the most endorsed files "since" you left the oblivion modding scene. As for things like "Best leveling system" that's super-massive-power-fist subjective. Personally I have always preferred oblivion xp. Others would stab me in the face for saying that and prefer the use-over-time systems.

Honestly, for us to list the amount of mods... it mindblowing. I find endorsemants are not 100% accurate. But they are a good start. Also, manually browing through catagories from scratch has always been what I end up doing after a long break. It might seem cumbersome, but man do you find some gems.

Like stackable equipment, which has less endorsemants than a mutant 9 finger hand has fingers, tons of other little mods. Scathe is hard to find, yet it produces damage numbers as you hit people. Minimap hud no longer refreshes the lod each time you move to a new cell. Tons and tons of little things. Everywhere.

Generic copy/paste for generic topic. Answer some of the questions in the copy/paste and give some more details and we'll probably be able to help you more.

If you want any further help I suggest you tell us about yourself; what you like and what you're looking for... Here's some questions to get you started:

Have you played Oblivion already?
What sort of things interest you?
What type of Character do you usually play? (good/evil, theif/mage, roleplayer/random-no-story-hack-and-slasher?)
Are there specific types of mods you think would interest you? (Quests, graphic mods, gameplay mods, overhauls, etc.)
When did you leave?
What did you not like about Oblivion? What did Oblivion not have or need more of?
Male or female character?

UOP: Should be easy to track down, just search for it, don't think its really had an secret beta type developments. there was some gameplay stuff done, but I think that got split into seperate versions for purists.

Graphics: mostly OBGE stufff I think, also saw arecent retexturing mod onthe tesnexus front page.

levelling mods have mostly stayed the same i think

quests....
Integration: The Stranded Light
Kragenier's
Dark brotherhood renewed
northern front
golden coast
Nehrim( total conversion really)
Also everything on the TOQL (Google: "TOQL")

Hi.

The best experience is with FCOM plus a select few additional nuggets.

It is a beast of an install. Don't be surprised if it takes you 10s maybe 20s of hours to get it all set up. Every time I lost patience with it or got to a new stage unscathed I'd screw something up and have to start over. Depending on your knowledge of how Oblivion mods function together and the intent of the various utilities you might go through similar stuff. Truthfully, it took me about 30 hours to download, package, install, tweak, and get the thing up and stable.

But it is sooooooooooo worth it.

Go that route, don't get discouraged, you'll learn a ton on the way.

Best resources:

TESIVPositive
FCOM thread (along with the MMM thread and a few other links provided by TESIVPos and FCOM)
The FCOM site
TOTO Oblivion
FCOM Faq at UESP

Have fun!
