TES and console gamers

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:54 pm

I have noticed that quite a lot of people on these forums have been blaming all console gamers for the failings of Oblivion and I would like to point out that it is not just our fault. It wasn't us who wanted oblivion to be like that, no matter what some people are saying. I know for one that I wasn't part of the suggestions thread for Oblivion.
TES is not just for people who can afford an expensive PC anymore and not every Console player is to blame for Oblivion's faults.
The reason I have said this is because I am getting fed up of people blaming the console players. We are not all idiots like some people think and I don't think any of us want a rubbish game, just because of what console you are playing. It is just like saying all people who like nintendo games are childeren or casual game players or that all teenagers are thugs just because of what some people say. So please before you think about blaming console gamers for any of the faults faults in TES, remember that it isn't just us to blame.
Note: TES will not be a PC exclusive game anymore, they will lose too much money in doing that.
(Now time for me to calm down after this rant)

People aren't saying that Bethesda dumbed down Oblivion simply because it was on consoles. Or did you forget that Morrowind was on consoles too? No, they're saying that Oblivion was simplified to attract a wider range of gamers. The fact that it was on consoles doesn't mean anything. If people are actually saying that it was simplified just to attract console gamers, then that's a pretty idiotic thing to say.

It's partly the fault of the interface. The menu system is a lot less efficient, half to make it simpler for controller use, half to make room for larger font that can be read from farther away (i.e., from a TV instead of a monitor). Many will also be quick to blame fewer interaction options on controllers having fewer buttons than a keyboard. Though not really "dumbing down" in itself, it's a flaw that gets lumped into it as a catch-all for people who don't like where the series is. And consoles are inanimate objects, so the players get yelled at instead.

You seem to have repeated 'don't blame the console players' several times in your first post, without really making much of a point or explanation beyond that.

A lot of people blame the console-ification for interface problems. i had no issues with Oblivion's PC interface (I thought it was a lot better than the mess that was Morrowind's PC interface)

Regardless, those people aren't really blaming the console players, moreso blaming bethesda for seemingly caring more about the console players than those who play on PC. Which is pretty arguable.

Also, yes, people cry about TES games become too casual, and the console market is generally a more casual market than PC (though not always, just look at WoW). Still, I don't think those people are blaming anybody but bethesda. Some people would prefer that bethesda didn't appeal to a large audience and make as much money, if it meant more games like Daggerfall and Morrowind. Sadly, Bethesda's not so small anymore, and can't just cater to their hardcoe PC western RPG fans anymore (though I think they still do a good job for these fans as well.)

I'm happy for bethesda and their huge audience, as any fan should be.

Its not your fault, but then if Oblivion was PC only title, it would have surely been different. i think in the end nobody's to blame, not even Bethesda, they worked hard and made a good game. They could have just made it better thats all.

Sorry but we don't do console/platform wars around here because we don't care what you play the games on. We just want you to play them.

If you find a post bashing console, report it and let the moderator deal with it but please don't make threads about it. The rules demand equal respect and civility. ;)
