Perks : The Name Edition

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:00 am

Just wanted to voice my dissatisfaction of the name "Perks". It sounds cheesy and non-central to the formation of a Character. Like it's an extra, tacked on, a little bit of a perk to help you. Not really good enough considering they are essentially the meat that defines our Characters. Why not just call them Abilities? So we have Skills and Abilities.

It cheapens the feel of some of the skills our Characters will learn and in the end will define them.

It was different in Fallout because they were something fun and a bit silly and you had Attributes and Skills as well. So they were a perk on top. But now they are central to our Characters so it bugs me.

Now i know this has been mentioned before and i know a lot of people will say. "Oh it's just a name, who cares?". If you are one of these people don't bother please, because i care and a lot is in a name. I also know it's too late for a change but maybe for the next one or at least let Bethesda know that this cheesy stuff doesn't belong in the Elder Scrolls.

Not really. I would prefer it to be called abilities or some other thing, but either way it doesn't bug me.

I agree. I hate the word 'perk'

It doesn't feel at all TES like. It actually kinda feels like they've just stuffed something from fallout into TES, which, they have, but they could at least mask that with a new name for the system.

I don't care, but if I had to I would call them "Mastery Perks" since that is what the perks in OB is called. Yep, it is perks in Oblivion. You get them at skill lvl 25, 50, 75 and 100 in each skill.

Don't care
Can't call them feats, thats D&D
Abilities a bit vague. A skill is an ability in a wider field than a perk will cover
Advantage, trait, skill focus?
None of them would change how well they work which is what will matter

I don't really like the term perk. It's too perky and it kind of implies that perks are peripheral bonuses rather than abilities that have been earned or learned.

Maybe it does sound whiny, but I also don't like the name Perks. I would prefer something else, something that's maybe a bit more fitting.

Hey it does sound a bit whiny yeah but i don't want the fact that my Character is a master with two swords to be a perk. Like he got that with the Christmas bonus. It should feel like he worked hard for that and it has come with skill

Yeah, I think something like "ability" or "talent" would be better. But that said Oblivion did have skill perks, but the word "perk" wasn't actually mentioned in the game as far as I remember. Maybe it will be the same way in Skyrim, who knows. If anything I bet it will be limited to a piece of text that says "choose a perk" when you level up. Shouldn't be too hard for someone to mod out if it really bothers people.

It sure enough has, the thread isn't particularly old nor is it closed, and it can be found http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1180942-should-perks-be-called-feats-instead-in-skyrim/.

I prefer "traits" for passives and "feats" for actives, but it's not going to be a dealbreaker for me.

Not a big fan of perks either.

Mastery points, specialization points, expertise points etc. sound better.
