Don't expect each hold to have a faction

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:57 am

I've been hearing a lot about this and I wanted to warn people who might be expecting to see this that it probably won't be in the game. I know in Morrowind, they had the great houses, but there were 3 of them and there's supposed to be 9 holds. It's a lot more, they wouldn't be able to add that level of content without it being watered down for each one. I think the holds will be mroe just like counties in Oblivion, maybe slightly more involved/political. On the other hand, I reckon you will probably have factioms for the Imperial and Rebel sides in the war.

Yeah I think its something like that. Wouldn't be surprised that you at some point may have to try sway certain holds to one of the sides in the civil war.

All I know is that a hold has an official. I'm guessing it's some kind of chief-guy. It was mentioned in one of the newer articles. Whether this goes for every hold or just that one mentioned in the article, I don't know.

I'm hoping there will be much political stuff though. That's pretty fun :P
Loved the Great Houses in Morrowind!

Just a note though, regarding what you're saying. Skyrim's team is a lot bigger and technology has developed much much much more. Things can be done a lot faster and more efficient today than before. This has to be considered before you're saying what you're saying when you compare with Morrowind.

Correction, not a real joinable faction, it will be a faction for each of the hold but it will only be used to make the inhabitants friendly towards each other. The number of factions in Oblivion is staggering as every house with more than one living in it has a faction for setting ownership.

If it is even possible to delve into this part of the game as a faction, I would expect no more than 5, one representing each of the 5 holds that have a City, large enough to actually hold considerable power, 4 of the holds do not seem to have a large city to represent it's power.

More likely is what you said, Loyalist or Rebels. That works fine for me, I just really hope it's a part of the game we can explore, and woven into the game as deeply as the Great House dynamics were in Morrowind.

Each town in Oblivion had a Count/Countess.

I'd bet that the civil war has 2-3 major sides, with the holds divided up among them. (Possibly quests for the major factions, for you to try to sign up unaligned holds to their flag.)

Oooooh Snap :P
EDIT: I hope some of the holds are in direct combat with others and you can win over towns for either side... Rebels FTW!

So that we don't have uproars from misconceptions that weren't realize...you know.....which always happens when games are in developement and haven't been released.

In Oblivion there were Begger factions, Factions for each city, Guilds, villages, etc etc and all that they offered was that those in the faction were +15 more friendlier to each other.

I hope Beth expanded on the faction bit :P

With the landmass "roughly" the size of Oblivion, I wasn't expecting that. I don't think each hold will be big enough to warrant it.

I haven't seen people talking as if each hold will have a fully fleshed out joinable faction like the MW Great Houses.

But, taking New Vegas, as a template, I could certainly see each having a faction that you can influence through doing various quests for them, and curry favour with certain ones that way. I hope that it will be possible to play one off against another, as it was in New Vegas.

People seem to think of factions in different ways. He doesn't mean the factions that are not revealed to the player, like the beggars and family factions, he means big, joinable ones like the Great Houses in Morrowind. I know this doesn't apply to some of you. Guilds, factions, whatever, lots of different forms.
