I am sure if anyone remembers the game Thief, they'll remember these features. I always felt these were the two things missing from Oblivion for a sneaky character.

I don't think we'll be able to take cover against walls. The latest wave of previews made it sound like stealth is largely the same except for enemies "alert" states.

Thief didn't let you press against walls, it wasn't added until Thief 3 ;)

Being able to affect lighting would be neat but that has a domino effect on stealth features: enemies need to react to this, which means enemies need better anti-stealth AI in general, and then combat and magic need to be just as involved, etc.

Go into sneak mode and walk next to a wall.
There! Wall pressing!

Dousing lightning sources would be cool though.

Depending on the context, dousing a light should either bewilder, and/or possibly put NPCs on alert. In someone's house, they should just mutter something about the lights and go and try to fix it (or maybe panic if they have low confidence), at a gatehouse, the guard should get worried and start shouting.

Dousing torches is confirmed if I am not hideously mistaken.

Like in Splinter Cell!
But without that low chime followed by mellow techno, I dunno if it would get my heart racing like Splinter Cell does :P

I played all the Thief games and I'd like if possible as many features included in Tes. Before Oblivion I read somewhere that they hired one of the guys who worked on thief especially for enhancing the stealth mechanics and I can say Oblivion was pretty good in that department but I wish they go all the way with ropes, estinguishing torches, making noise to distract and all.

Big fan of Thief. A lot of stealth techniques could be exported successfully in Skyrim (more likely in next Tes though):
-hug walls
-estinguish lights
-ropes, climbing
-carrying bodies out of sight
-knocking npcs unconscious with non-lethal weapons

Well such AI features was in ten year old games, like already mentioned Thief and in Arx Fatalis, inability add them now looks strange does not?

I'm all for it, I loved being a thief in Oblivion and if they can make it even more interesting that can only be good.

Will we be able to press against walls and douse torches, Thief-style?

Press against walls? Doubt it. Douse torches? I really hope so.

I really like that the Witcher 2 is doing this sort of stealth, but I'm not expecting much advancement in terms of stealth from Oblivion to Skyrim. Same fundamentals, just better.

I have a feeling that might be the case. If we at least have the ability kill light sources and better AI reactions, I think it's sufficient. To the other person, my bad. I have only played Thief 3 so I wasn't sure about the features in the earlier games.

I would love dawning a dark outfit and hood and sitting in the shadows while everyone walked around in the light unaware of me.

Until someone walked right up to me and stared into the darkness for a second or two and is like, "Hu?... what the?!?!" *slit's throat*...

Back to my silent vigil...
