ini editing--changes not recognized

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:35 pm

hi all.

i'm running morrowind on my vista machine, installed in the default location. i've tried to make a few basic changes to my ini (yes to all, enable screenshots, max FPS, that sort of thing). i've read a lot about how this has to work with vista, and after it wouldn't let me save my changes, i used the trick where i make the edits in a different location, then replace the ini in the program files (yes, i backed it up first). when i look at the ini, it shows all my changes, but the game does seem to be recognizing them--i still can't take a screenshot. any thoughts?

thanks a bundle for any help!

The best thing you can do to avoid this problem (and others) is to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/781497-vistawindows-7-problems/page__p__11352753#entry11352753

If you're using MGE, the screenshots will be disabled and you have create a macro in MGE to take screenshots. Instructions in the MGE thread.

i don't have MGE, so i'm not worried about that. i've been playing a lot and have a few mods. changing the install location at this point won't mess with anything, right? thanks for the tip and sorry if this sounds like an obvious question, but this is actually my first PC gaming experience.

pardon the double post, but i figure nobody would find my edit. as per the post linked above i...

made the new folder in c:\Bethesda
copied and pasted the morrowind folder from c:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks (so now there's morrowind stuff in two places)
everything seems to be in order there, and i can point the shortcut on my desktop to run from the new folder
when i run the game, i can now see my FPS and take screen shots, so the original problem is solved and it's recognizing my ini edits

what it did do, however, was uncheck all my mods (no big deal) and the game can't seem to find my save files. they still show up in wrye mash when i open it through the new location (and i backed them up first anyway). the saves also still appear in their default location, "C:\Users\me\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Saves." how should i move them or redirect them so that morrowind recognizes them from the new location?

also, can i (and how do i) safely get rid of the old location once i have everything working the way i want? do i have to use the uninstaller there or can i just recycle all of it?

edit: started a new game from the new location and saved it, found where that file is. copied one of my old saves there and re-checked my mods, but i get an error saying the selected mods don't match the save data when it should. also, wrye mash only seems to be recognizing the saves in the default location, not the new one or the copied one.

back again.

pointed my wrye mash shortcut to the new install, so now that's recognizing my mod list there and my saves. i updated any of my bad esps and synced my save in mash, so getting closer. when i start up the save, i get a bunch of errors, listed below from my warnings...

i recognize the beginning of that as a bunch of dialogue from the temple, and have no idea why it would be affected. these still come up after selecting repair all in wrye mash. if i click through them, the save seems fine. saved in a new slot and these went away, so i'm not sure how much they matter. going to move my other saves and sync them too, i guess.

the only remaining questions then, are if i need to care about the errors above and what to do with the old install.
