[WIPz] Journal Mod - A new beginning

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:59 pm

It is finally time to announce my plans for the Journal Mod. I know I promised an update a long, long, long, long time ago and feel bad for letting it disappear of the face of the earth.

One of the first big changes is switching from using Pluggy to just using OBSE for the core systems. Any form of text importing and exporting will thus become optional. And as a bonus I'll also add support for using ConScribe instead of Pluggy for file manipulation for those who experience crashes when using Pluggy (or those that simply don't want to use it).

But that is merely the tip of the iceberg, the mod will also undergo some serious restructuring in terms of layout and usability. The current version consists of two parts: the series of messageboxes for smaller pieces of text and the larger journal books.

The messageboxes are really just a remnant of the very first version and the only reason I kept it in later versions was because of its easier use for smaller text notes. Atleast, that was my intention. In reality the navigation of these messageboxes was a real pain and was a bit counterproductive.

In later versions I introduced these so-called "journal books", which were basically special books in which you could write stuff down. But in my attempts to keep their usage more immersive I also crippled their use for smaller pieces of text. If you wanted to make a small note, separate from any major book you are writing in you had to go through a long, painstaking process. Purely to setup a dummy book (of sorts) for your intended (small) note.

Now that the current flaws have been exposed I'll explain how I plan to fix them and make the Journal Mod better than ever. The writing in books will remain largely the same although book creation will be simplified alot.

I'll be completely dumping the series of messageboxes and integrate their intended purpose directly into books. Take http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l243/Kyoparadox/ScreenShot1-1.jpg as a (crude) guideline. You'll be able to click on the title of the note (the highlighted bit in the picture) to edit (or create) it without having to close or exit the textinput. This allows you to adjust the title during and/or after typing the note's text without going through lots and lots messageboxes. Big plus! :)

The second big change is in how all these 'loose notes' are gathered and accessed, you'll get one book (henceforth referred to as notebook) that serves as an interface between you and your notes. Opening it will display the most recent entry and you'll be able to select a different note from a http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l243/Kyoparadox/ScreenShot2-1.jpg. And unlike a messagebox, where you are limited to 8-10 buttons, this list can be endless (and most likely scrollable!). Thus it will be alot simpler and quicker to locate and view the desired note. Another big plus! :)

The third and final major change is the way you can categorize a note. I'll replace the use of static, pre-created categories with on-the-fly labels. Meaning you can give a note a label simply by typing it directly (multiple labels being comma-separated. Then should you wish to sort or filter by label you just type in whatever label(s) the notes should have and that's all you need to do. The final big plus! :)

Now that the general idea for the next version is out in the open I'll just state that plenty of things will be configurable. There will also be some minor-to-major improvements to the typing process as a whole. I'm even trying to make a GetMousePosInText function which would allow me to allow you let you jump to a specific point in the text simply by clicking the general position. It is still uncertain if that will be added but I'm certainly gonna try. :P

Oh and don't mind the horrible layout/size of the two example pictures. They are merely to give a basic idea of how all of the different parts will be integrated into the book menu. If you have an idea or suggestion with regards to a feature then feel free to tell me about it. :)

Hey!

This sounds great!

One idea about the small notes, but I'm not sure I like it better than yours. So just throwing it out there.

Have a special container (such as a scroll case), that would function in a similar fashion to your "notebook" i.e. it would allow you to store the notes and find the one you're looking for. And, on their own, each note would be a scroll. For example, when you opened the scroll case you could have it show all the scrolls you ever wrote, or filter the results based on the tags - kind of like the alchemy thing.

And I'm not sure this is possible, but could you increase the character size of the journals?

Looking forward to this!

Interesting approach, I'll keep it in mind.

If you mean the amount of characters you can use in a journal then no, it's already at its max. If you mean the actual size of the letters then it is sort of possible. You can change fonts, although the size of a font itself is static. I've been looking into a way to change the font size directly in books but without any luck.

Hey!

Just had another thought - would it be possible to have the reverse backup enabled as well? I don't mind if it requires Pluggy, personally, but it would make it easier to restore previously written journals.

What I mean, if it's not clear by now, is to be able to import the text from the txt or html file into the in-game journal.

Not essential, by any means, but I think it would come in handy.

Thanks!

Sadly, uninstalling the mod will leave the dummy, cloned, books in your inventory, empty... :(

What about jacket customization?
A whiloe ago I found a modding resource which has an extreme amount of book jackets (I think it was yours). I plan to add support for that, meaning if the user has those files installed they'll be able to select the 'source book' from a container to be used as a book jacket and inventory icon. Ofcourse the five in the current version will remain but I agree that more book jackets would be nice. :)

I'll try and keep backwards compatibility with the text/html files from the current version. Although it may not be in the intial release, not sure if I'm gonna go for a simple beta or a fullblown initial release.

Yeah, it was probably mine. I did one, although I have a new monitor now and can see some of the problems with my textures I couldn't see with my old monitor (thankfully) and an planning on correcting them (one day when time is free...)
Also I am going to optimize the most generally used book meshes if needed and I have new ones I have made. With (again time... a tutorial on how to use the new UV maps and resources to create your own jackets...)
Working on a Advertising Media.plugin (Books, notes, scrolls, posters, printed material etc) which may one day be the COBL of well (printed products) anyway.

Glad to see you continuing work on the Journal Mod :) :) :)

A little bump to say that I really liked the journal mod and am glad to see it's getting an overhaul even though it fit my needs fine enough as it has been. :)

Hey, hey!

This looks pretty interesting! I've been looking at mods like this... er... well, one mod like this, anyways... for some while now!

Very cool to see that it's not an idea which has died out over time. This sounds like it could really be the best iteration of journal-keeping yet.

Hey!

I hope things are progressing well on this, though I have so little time to play these days that I'm not really in a rush.

Was thinking about a "feature" thingie. Would you consider using inkwells and quills, perhaps even having to buy empty journal books for the scribblings? I was thinking that you'd need, for example, one inkwell per volume and one quill per five volumes, or something like that. It would give those items a purpose and it shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Cheers!

I'd like to know as well. It'd be cool to have a nice, advanced version of this mod.

I'm interested in an updated version of this mod too. I found the small notes too difficult to work with in the current version.
