Starting Character

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:20 pm

So from the trailers we see this huge kinda Conan the barbarian guy fighting a dragon. Birds are also a big role in skyrim I feel versus other games such as oblivion where I didn't feel it necessary to be an imperial. Same as morrowind, it didn't feel like I had to be a dark elf...
But now we find ourselfs surrounded by these huge nords and I kinda feel like my usual stealth character just won't work so well against something as large and ferocious as a dragon...
I feel like I have to play as an Orc or a Nord, not that it's a bad thing I'm just saying its a new feel for a TES game... I was just wondering that if you guys feel the sane way... Do you feel like you need to be a big menacing viking/barbarian kinda character? Or am I just crazy?

I don't feel the need because I, personally, don't like in your face combat characters. Sure, I'll make one at some point, but that'll probably be more of a Paladin.

I'm gonna be going Mage straight from the off.

Nah I just feel like they are making it difficult to kill dragons all around. I am hoping they make it possible for all arch types.

I will be playing a stealth/magic character. It does seem like combat folks would get the advantage here, especially over stealth characters, but I'll trust they've thought of that.

Hmm but do you think that a Mage character will be able to hold of one or two dragons off? Well maybe if you had some kinda daedra or creature summoned you could avoid direct combat... Im just a little nervous about holding on my own against dragons when I'm usually killing with one hit or picking off from afar

Yeah, I reckon a mage could fend off a dragon. Think of the spells we're going to be able to cast. Not just summons. Illusion to hide from the dragon, pop out of invisibility to nuke him with a spell, then back into invisibility. And that's a simple, easy tactic.

Hmm okay I see where your coming from here... I still feel like stealth characters are getting the low end of the deal however...

This I agree with. However, it will be interesting to take down a dragon with nothing but your agility, a dagger and a bow. I'm hoping the dragons have weakspots, slow time Dragonshout and then fill said weak spot with arrows.

Still, it's gonna be hard. Which is good.

I feel like dragons will prove very menacing no matter who you are but yes I agree about the Warriors having an easier time of it.

Seeing as there's no classes and no attributes, I don't have to worry about properly leveling my character for fear of being weak at higher levels and being at a disadvantage.

So I'm going to make my character use a mix of cloth, leather and iron armors, one handed weapons (primarily a long sword with an off-hand dagger on occasion), good with a bow and with alchemy. Primarily a warrior but can sneak around as well to get a jump on the opponent before combat starts.

Basically I'm imagining my character to be a TES version of Aragorn. I could never make his type of warrior in Oblivion because it was slightly too diverse. Though I did in Morrowind and had a good play through with him.

That's the good thing about Skyrim's system. You can make any type of character and succeed. I know the TC is saying he's worried the warriors we'll be up against will be too menacing for anything other than a pure warrior, but believe me, the balance will be there. They only show so many strong warriors to show the culture of Skyrim.

I'm going stealth, I always do :D

Two weapons for up close
Bow
Stealth
Alchemy
And so far thats all I have, depends on the game mechanics really. Probably light or no armor (if we can enchant clothing). I like my stealth characters to have little to no magic as far as spells go (in Morrowind and Oblivion it was just enough to be able to enchant items), but I dont know how that will work out in Skyrim.
Probably Breton for race though, which is odd I guess since I try to stay away from magic on my stealth build, but I do like the resists and the somewhat unassuming pressence that a Breton has (rp purposes, I just like to feel that my stealth character can blend in or be easily overlooked in a crowd when he wants to be).

So yeah, bit worried about dragons. I dont picture the above build being a dragon slayer :D should be fun.
