"You're going to die in here! You hear me? You're going

True. I guess I was only paying attention to the Dunmer part and not the prisoner part. But I guess Bethesda could take that formula however they want. They could take the strict route, that the first interaction must be a Dunmer prisoner, or a looser interpretation that it could just be a Dunmer of any situation or just be a prisoner of any race.

Movies that have a sort of formula (like James Bond movies) will often change small aspects of that formula if they want to give the impression of being revisionist or a change from the past. If Skyrim is supposed to be a new step forward for the world of Elder Scrolls, shedding its Morrowind and Oblivion roots, they could set up your early experience to feel like a different kind of Elder Scrolls game (change the Dark Elf prisoner) while still keeping key parts that make you feel like you're still playing some sort of Elder Scrolls game (you are still a prisoner). But this is over thinking it a little, I guess. People have certain expectations of Elder Scrolls, and it's up to Bethesda when it comes to meeting those expectations or changing it up a little.
If they wanna change up the formula a bit they could have multiple prisoners with you at the start, maybe chained together walking down the green mile. You see the gruesome sight of them being beheaded one by one but then a chaotic event disrupts the executions and you and the one Dunmer escape. Maybe as he's leading you through the escape quest he can give you the standard quick game mechanics tutorial, like healing, fighting rats, etc.
Or how bout a prisoner revolt? A bunch of the psychopaths cause a riot and start escaping amid screaming blades flashing and fire/sparks everywhere at night? You can take the opportunity to escape and the escapees could be a problem for smaller wall less towns later on and you can choose to help out about it.
There's so many interesting possibilities for the story just in the beginning alone.

I'm personally hoping to see an a**hole dunmer get beheaded right before me. Like maybe we're waiting in line and this guy next to you is being mean and then you see him executed and you're all happy. I'm really anxious to see how Esbern saves you though.

If they improve bosmers' personalities the way many are begging, an "adoring fan" ahead of you in line would be a nice touch!

Also, can anyone confirm a "dungeon buddy" in the pre-Morrowind games?
Well, the dungeon you were in for Daggerfall wasn't a prison, so you weren't in there with anyone. You were on a ship when the witch-queen conjured up a storm at sea to kill you, and your ended up in a pirate den.

In Arena, you were the only palace guard still alive as far as I can recall, there was certainly nobody else in the prison.

I like the idea of him being executed before you. In that case however he should probably be likeable, that would add to it a lot, I think.

This.

This Esbern guy must be pretty BA though.

I can't wait to see how they portray the "About to be Executed" feeling

Its gonna be tense and fun to experience.

He should be a bit crazy, raving about the return of the dragons right up until he's brought before the executioner, only then to burst into triumphant laughter as a dragon shows up and lays waist to your captors....but that laughter is abruptly cut short when the dragon then turns on him.

Thank the Et'Ada that their are still those who carry on our heritage.

Now on topic, in Arena the first TES, you weren't put in a cell with a prisoner,a nd the first person you saw was a dieing sorceress giving you a message to save the empire.

Better yet, the prisoner and yourself escape the dragon, but you're tied together, and he's got the executioner's ax. That would give us a good chance to get familiar with the combat.

Or, you could be with several criminals. One dunmer would be a total [censored], and everyone would hate him. When taken to be executed, he is the first to be hung. The moment his neck snaps, a dragon/riot event would begin, and almost everyone makes it out. Except for him.

I don't think it'll be a Dunmer again. I imagine it'll be http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4lrm97dBqNo/TUFlwtX3jCI/AAAAAAAAAY0/L3ZQ1rnHA3g/s1600/artofskyrim_009_prisoner.jpg.

But no one will be able to match Jiub. Saint Jiub! Vanquisher of Cliff Racers! Saint Jiub! Killed by the Daedra!

That guy seems to fit the coming events.

Nord political prisoners/ prisoners of war....

You then get caught up in an escape that was planned for them, but of course you are swept along with it because it is simply too risky to leave you behind...you then spend a very tense time in "enemy" territory until you can escape "over the lines' at which time you find out that you are the dragonborn/chosen one etc and are then looked apon by that faction to save the world etc etc....

Something like that i reckon.

How about a Scamp...

I'd prefer someone like Jiub...his was a nice friendly face kind of your first "friend" in MW...whereas Dreth just made me waste magicka trying to light him on fire from my cell lol

Though a scamp with a set of drums would be a nice easter egg :]

Whats up with the chopping block? I want to be killed by an arch mage or possibly have to be slowly killed by a storm atronach filled with rage.
