Controls in Skyrim

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:44 pm

Now i have read a while ago in an interview that the dragon shouts will on Xbox360 be RS and Playstation R3 Now that will mean most likely that the camera will be the same as Fallout 3 seeing as it was a great hit and it made allot of money. But then how will we block? O.O or was that another key? anyways will that mean they will need to take something out? And to me it seems if they take something out it is probably sitting and such, well i don't know but with this new thing the dragonshouts they must probably change a button or remove that action completely.

Please excuse me for fail english and such. And somebody probably knows that im wrong/right so please tell me (i think i am wrong) But please enlighten me fellow TES fans. If you read through all this have a :turtle:

He likely means you can't be serious.

Block is tied to one of the left triggers, but we don't really know the setup on the controllers.

It matters little to me, since I will be using my mouse and keyboard to play.

I'm sure it won't really be an issue since we have always been able to map our own controls. Put it where you want it.

It is called an "action" button. It doesn't only serve to sit. You know, open doors, talk to people...
But having a sit button would be great. That Ogre is too tough? sit!

I am very happy that I have never had any intentions of playing this on my xbox. Even more important than the mods the PC allows the game to be controllable for me. Since the original xbox and the 360 i've played any shooter with an inverted lefty control scheme even though i'm right handed( look with left thumb move with right). beating my face on a brick wall would be more enjoyable than trying to adjust 10 or so years of a certain control scheme to a one size fits all for the game i've anticipated most since oblivion. My brother plays with a similar scheme as I do on xbox and had the sad situation of not having a PC that could run oblivion so he was forced to play on xbox and had to adjust, he said he manged to ok but any type of archery was nearly impossible for him. I tried the control scheme they forced you on oblivion to play on his xbox and threw done the controller after a minute because my brain hurt.

With that said I seriously hope Bethesda lets people map out their stick layout and customize the controls as much as possible for Skyrim. Even though i will play on pc and have no real stake in this it annoys me to still see xbox games come out with set controls and that some people actually think it's perfectly fine to force people to set scheme just because they are comfortable with it not matter how hard it is to adjust for others. In all reality it is really not much to ask for Bethesda to have multiple options. So when people say what button does this the answer should be whichever one you map to it.

In my copy of oblivion there is a swap stick option and that is on the PC. I find it hard to believe that option(though I've never played OB on xbox, MW had this option on xbox though) was created for the PC. So it's true that there is no swap stick option in the controller config of Oblivion on the Xbox360?

I never owned the Xbox version but my brother played it through on Xbox and said there was a set control scheme I found it hard to believe but when I played his for a second controlling it for me was next to impossible. So unless they updated it way down the line it was a one size fits all as far as I know. Makes me very happy I play on a PC, I hope they change it for Skyrim. The idea of the most free and open RPG with full customization on nearly everything yet forcing you to play with a set control scheme kind of defeats the purpose.

This is crucial. I basically exclusively game on my 360 console, and I was SHOCKED that Oblivion had only one set control style. Unfortunately, I play a lot of FPS, and my preferred control style was not the default in Oblivion making the first person view nearly impossible to use beyond basic button pushing and object grabbing. This greatly reduced my enjoyment of an otherwise brilliant game. Please allow for other control styles in Skyrim.

This ^. How much extra memory does it really consume to add a feature to a game where you can setup your own control scheme?

Edit: Simply, how intuitive a control scheme is, can really enhance or break game enjoyment.

Maybe we will get a sit button in TES VIII when the Dualshock controller looks like that: http://www.soygik.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/ps4controller.jpg

I think R3 is a strange place for it, hopefully this is changeable (personally I would put it on R2 for PS3 and the same button with a different designation on the 360 maybe the Right Trigger {been a while since I have held a 360 control}).

What you have to remember is while they are adding at least one function to the controls, they are also probably removing one. If you remember, assuming you played it, in Oblivion there was a button for attacking, one for blocking, and one for spells (R1, L1, R2 respectively for PS3 and mouse buttons and a keyboard key default on PC, if memory serves). The difference in Skyrim is that the actions are tied to your hands, so it would presumably be R1 for your right hand and L1 for your left hand, irregardless what is in your hand, leaving R2 logically open for whatever they need to do with it. Meaning we have lost one function (a dedicated spell casting button) and gained one (a dedicated dragon shout button) so it should all work out fine. And hopefully the layout can be changed on PC and consoles this time.

This is, of-course, simply with I have inferred from what little we know and as such could be completely wrong, but it's what I would do...whatever that's worth.

Edit: Grammar
