why does fose bypass disk checking but obse doesnt?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:10 pm

im just curious. its kinda nice not to have to whip out my disk everytime i wanna play fallout 3 but if i want to zip around cyrodil i still have to put my disk in. is there a reason that fose allows this but obse doesnt. im assuming the game licenses are identical so it cant be a legal reason. :twirl:

Fallout 3 employs the SecuROM copy protection system (however StarForce is used in the Russian version). The particular implementation of SecuROM used in Fallout 3 doesn't incorporate any other DRM or online activation requirements - the only noticeable aspect is the disk check component which can easily be bypassed legally. This is because the disk check component seems to be tied specifically to the game's Launcher, so by directly accessing the game's main executable instead, you can bypass the disk check.

Since the Script Extenders skip the launcher on both, the FOSE one has the byproduct of skipping the disk check.

Before things get totally out of control due to overzealous mods:

FOSE does not (!!!) change any protection method of Fallout 3! Neither FOSE nor OBSE alter copy protection schemes in any way!

Fallout 3 simply doesn't have a disc check in the main executable, but in the launcher. For Oblivion it's the other way around (disc check in the main executable, but not in the launcher).

I guess this comment is not very helpful, but incidentally the FOSE byproduct has been ever so welcome for me, much more than any such external feature I could have hoped for.

I have been modding OB for the last 3 years, and the lack of gaming drove me to try FO. Well atm I play FO and mod OB, until I get Deadly Reflex 6 done. I usually launch FO when I realise I?m too tired to mod anymore.

Just imagine the joy when I realise, over and over again, that I forgot to change the disks - but it doesn?t matter!

Sorry to be a pain about this, but I've seen what discussions can do here if the wrong people get this wrong. FOSE does not, in any way at all, change Fallout 3's protection scheme.

Don't believe me? Put your Oblivion disc into your drive and doubleclick on Fallout3.exe in your Fallout 3 install folder. FOSE does nothing in this regard (as seen if you start Fallout 3 directly) - Fallout 3 doesn't come with a disc check in the first place, therefore FOSE doesn't alter anything in this regard.

It must not, see. And if the wrong people think it would do so (which it doesn't!), it can end very badly. So let's not go there, and let everyone know: FOSE does not remove any disc check.

Absolutely true. The only thing FOSE does is provide you with a shortcut to Fallout3.exe.

The Fallout 3 tweak guide (which is where I got my quote, by the way) even gives clear instructions on how to make your own shortcut in order to skip the disk check.

This was Bethesda's decision to implement and has nothing to do with FOSE at all.

Since the original question has been answered in full, closed to prevent further heat not accompanied by corresponding light.
