Gear for mages?

Post » Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:05 pm

Robes that don't look like burlap sacks. I liked the more battle-ready style of robes in DA:O but the one or two seen so far in screens and the trailer of Skyrim look much improved from Oblivion. Also a staff that funnels spells the player casts, rather than shooting their own enchantment. I always thought using a staff in Oblivion and Morrowind was pointless because (if I remember correctly) it doesn't raise your skills and any type of player can use it. A staff shouldn't cast spells for you, it should be a focus for a mages spells, in my opinion, perhaps adding spellpower and reducing magicka costs.

Yes, a thousand times. If we're not going to have Staves as a combative and defensive viability, this is the least they could do.

I'd like to have pouches and potions showing in third person. Dunno, I think it would look cool.

I've never been a fan of the whole mage in robe thing. Dragon Age 2 pretty much proved to me that mages look SO MUCH better wearing light armor, and I always went cleric over wizard in D&D because they can cast spells and use heavy armor effectively.

I really think they should just clear this cliche off.

I think that's confirmed in the Gamereactor story a while back?

Whoa! Cloaks are confirmed? In Gamereactor? I'm checking this out, now.

In the gameplay trailer in the scene with the guy wearing a robe, you can see a pouch. So at least that's confirmed ;)

Thats why having more clothing options is good

so if your a mage you could have a briastplate over your robes, a belt, different gloves, rings, ect and so on. Chant it up and style it up.

I'm really hoping for more non-armored clothing options. It always bugged me in Oblivion how all I could use for pure mages for enchanting were robes, hoods, and shoes if I didn't want my spells to become less effective

Mage gear?

How about eye of newt and toe of frog. Maybe wing of bat thrown in for good measure...oh wait, that's the cooking part Todd talked about.

Wouldn't it be nice if they did something with that damn crystal ball they had in OB? Maybe use it for scrying (like maybe a detect life effect when equipped in a hand?)

But really...better clothing, robes, gloves, hats would be nice. I kind of thought a wand would be nice. Maybe you could use a wand one handed and your spells would channel thru it. And if you used a staff (two handed) it either had it's own effect like OB or you channeled thru the staff, but got a bonus like a +% damage or duration or something. But I guess that would mean that most pure mages would always use a staff if they wanted that extra damage, but that might not be a bad thing. Or maybe channeling spells thru a staff would negate any penalties for wearing armor. But this could all just be stupid or overpowered.

If you insist on wearing armor (and honestly, anyone who couldn't play an unarmored mage in Oblivion.... umm..... wasn't optimally skilled), then you can't cast spells as effectively. If you want to cast spells effectively, man up and cast them - just you and a layer of cloth vs. the world.

I'm stretching your context for my question, but I've seen you make references in the past to the ease of playing a pure mage. Are you talking only vanilla? I feel that with FCOM, Economy Enhanced, and some of the other mods I use, it can be pretty rough going, at least for the first dozen levels. Right now I'm having trouble scrounging up 1500+ gold per spell, and that alone makes it hard to play "pure".

I'd like some unique battlemage armour - something that a normal warrior can not wear
It should be light and flexible and not cover my whole body as i will use magic to shield myself but the armour is for surprise attacks and seeing as i can't back peddle quickly in Skyrim I want a bit more protection
I'd prefer it to elven in style for a more mystical fashion
No more robes - I have to run up and down mountains and i'm not doing that in something that looks like I should be walking in not running in.
My mage doesn't want a wizard hat she wants a simple circlet that contains soul gems to concentrate her magicka and hold a reserve pool of magicka if necessary.

give me some rings that I can see on my fingers

Like others I'm all for more clothes though i want some leathers - why can't bethesda make ranger mage clothing - I want something hard wearing for outdoors but that is as stylish as an assassin yet screams of battle mage

This! Unless I'm role-playing a clueless academic, many of the robes and non-armor clothing in the game aren't practical for "field exercises". Plus there's the whole bad-ass vanity thing that might creep into a character when it's least expected.

the main things i want back are gloves and more variety in robes. also, one of the things i didn't really like about oblivion was that it seemed like a lot of the rewards for quests were designed less for magi and more for your typical cookie cutter warrior character. i understand that most people will play that type of character, but still it was annoying.

My first dragon-born is going to be an epic battlemage: the titular Sal Paradise, direct dunmer descendent of the Nerevarine!!! XD He is the best hope for his people, a young man born under auspicious stars, sent to Skyrim to learn the rest of his heritage (dunmer/nord parents.)

He will be swaddled in: boots and leggings, robes, possibly a mages helm, and bound cuirass FOR BATTLE.

He shall wield: a legendary Defenders shield- ultimately enchanted with Reflect, a poisoned dagger, and any cool staves he finds.

THATS IT.

Sal is in Skyrim to complete his studies, therefore he will read every book, learn every spell and shout possible. He is also my most wicked character (of 4) and will join the "evil" faction, whatever it may be. Hes not senselessly evil, but Machiavellian, power hungry, and plays pick-up basketball with daedra...and of course theres no love lost with the Nords.

I think this is the big one, everybody. Combat has been the Scrolls biggest weakness, and theyre hooking it up large this time. Especially for mages = magic combos!!!

I see scenarios playing out like fantastic action films = thugs surrounding my hero, who isn't moving, they can only hear him chanting under his breath. Suddenly, one of the bandits bursts into flames!! The other is beset by a wicked daedric spider, the last is gripped with sheer terror (illusion, natch) and flees - only to be zapped with paralysis. (please bethesda, add screaming?? :-3 ) ...yes, the last kill is the one to savour, Sal slowly approaches, channels his last action hero- "Let off some steam, Bennett!" annnnd slits his throat.

Im supremely confident BGS is steadily crafting the best interactive RPG in existence (haters, please please stop whining) Bethesda is your DM!!!....seriously, at this rate Skyrim is going to generate a strange loop that svcks us all into Tamriel...inner vision maaann X

Well...be seeing you! ;-)

What annoyed me was that even the popular Oblivion mods were the same; there was all these beautiful custom outfits I could get, but each and every last one of them are armour!

The moders are just as guilty as Bethesda in ignoring the needs of mages to be fashionable.

I love being a mage in TES games. You can do everything anyone else can do, and more.

But there seemed to be a shortage of mage gear in OB.

Yes, you could enchant clothing, but so can any other character.

I'd like;

Wands, They'd be the daggers of magical weapons. Faster than a staff, but weaker.

Orbs, Held in the off hand, they significantly increase a spell's/spell school's power.

More clothes/robes. The clothes in OB didn't really have the "adventuring wizard" look. And the robes were mostly just recolors of the mage robe.
Something like this would be great for clothing; http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20051217042459/nwn2/images/9/93/PHB35_PG57_WEB.jpg

Spell tomes. They would add spells that you could only use with the tome equipped. Since you can have a spell in each hand, I'd think they'd offer a powerful spell, with less magicka required.
Whippin' out a spell book an melting faces sounds awesome.

I'd also just be happy with more variety in staves and robes.

TL;DR - More items for mages.

Its unlikely that they'll add much more than they did in OB, but a guy can dream.

Any suggestions, what do you want?

I want the items in your list. It woud add a lot of choice and decitions to the usage of magic.

Wait for it... CLOAKS and CAPES!

Cloaks and capes should be usable for everybody, not just mages. Mages should however have equal amount of equipmentslots as users of heavy and light armor. Gloves for example and robes that don cover your leggs.

I would like to see a more battle mage take on it...I mean you could still wonder the mountains in your mages robe and sling spells and whatnot...but perhaps something along the lines of a special line of light armor (glass for instance) that mediates between the Spell Effectiveness and Armor stats...graphically it would be along the lines of an armor top with a more robe like bottom.

I want my amulets to be visible (and rings).

I also want more hats available (or at least more than one style of hood with just differing colours).

I pointy hat that flops over! (like Dumbledore's i suppose)

And of course like already stated, and already confirmed to an extent, more robe styles.

More clothes: gloves, braces, circlets and hats, Oblivion lack them badly why vanilla has only prison irons as clothes for mages?
And nice to see return of enchant limit so robes will actually be better option for mages then shirts and pants, as well make high class clothes be better then lower class rags for powerfull mage,
if skirt/belt slot will be available at last like tail slot in Oblivion, there can be pouches and bags, additional amulets and book belts.
Robes must use only upper body slot and be much more unique and slender not like retexture of same bathrobe mesh.
Small mesh details can greatly increase uniques of armors
