Eating animations for predators

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2009 7:22 pm

Imagine walking into a cave and you think it is typical. You make your way deeper and it becomes darker. You Notice a blood trail on the floor, you look left and right and you see bloody fingerprints on the wall. Then you hear growls and the sound of flesh ripping and bones crunching. You follow the sound and see this http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5162/5343653161_3468ebab86.jpg A troll eating a human cadaver, he looks at you a growls and scares the crap out of you...

I made this topic because I do believe that there will be animations for creatures eating. Based off of that concept alone. The concept is literally conveying the creature eating, and if bethesda showed a concept to the public then those scenes wil be in the game. Also there was a picture of a polar bear over a dead mammoth carcass. So tell me what you think, do think this feature will be in?

I get the feeling it will be in, especially for wolves and such. As we heard they hunt for food, then protect their kill if you come too close. So I take it they eat it as well.

Allowing conjured Zombies to feast on fallen enemies would be nice.

Honestly I'll be very disappointed if animals that hunt don't actually eat there kill. Anytime open world have some animals 'hunt' other animals its usually just predators having everything but there own kind on hostile. Which results in dead friendly stuff and then they go back to wandering leaving the corpse.

I'm pretty sure they'll have eating animations, but I dread the idea of it not.

Definitely not a polar bear, btw, OP.

Looks more like a Kodiak sized grizzly or something akin to the short-faced bear/cave bear from the Pleistocene era.

I agree with the ideas floating around on this topic so I don't have a lot to add to it.. but considering the German video thread topic is locked again (post limit) I will tie this into your topic: Speaking of animations, anyone notice how the draugrs did taunting animations where they held their axes out at you, in a fashion to say "you're mine"? That excited me and I pooed a little.

If they can add a system that makes the corpse the thing is eating smaller all the time, or even better, actually have pieces of it dragged of, it would be so cool.

Still not as epic as what happens when you shoot the rat in Freeside. (STILL surprised that Faux didn't have anything to say about that...)

"Too much development/ animation work".

Nonsense. I'm willing to bet their new animation engine, Havok Behavior is one of their most valuable assets on this development cycle. They are likely taking full advantage of this new tech to make the whole world come to life. Animations have a very small asset size/performance cost compared to other aspects of the game so I have little doubt that they are cramming 1000's upon 1000's of them into Skyrim.

I agree. This would be a welcome improvement. Creatures need more casual animations. I mean, how many times have you snuck into a cave to find a bunch of trolls just standing there, doing absolutely nothing... like they're just waiting for you to sneak up and attack.

It would be cool if you could stumble upon a sleeping creature too. Like a sleeping troll or dragon even.

Did you ask Pete on twitter? Hopefully he'll respond.

I think the problem the Spartan was referring to was not that the game can't handle too many animations. He was saying that creating all those animations will take too long >>> become too expensive.

I see another problem: If we have eating animations for animals, people will want eating animations for humans, too.^^

Again Havok Behavior will have streamlined the process and they've had 6000 hrs per person. Even with only 3 people working on them that's 2000 animations at 9hrs each. They are professionals so I'm not worried at all.

We already had those in Oblivion we just couldn't use them, only NPCs. Havok Behavior to the rescue.
