What the Hell are spiders doing in the Far Northern Hinterla

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:20 am

The day a TES game takes place on planet Earth is when people should have concerns about things such as this. :P

That's true. It actually always baffles me when I hear NPCs in Oblivion say things like "What on Earth...". It doesn't make much sense, and I can't cite a time when an NPC says it, but I assure you they do.

A reasonable answer would be that spider's on earth don't have any food in the winter so they hibernate when all the bugs die off. In skyrim, a spider that large could eat mammals and other large creatures that venture to close to his web all year round. Also, it's size alone suggests an ability to fend of the cold and that fact that we know they hang out in caves suggests it's able to shelter itself from the harsh weather. I see no reason why it would need to hibernate or dissapear due to lack of food.

It's a fantasy game.

If they were realistically that large, their exoskeletons would weigh them down too much to move.

So there's a substance that exists only on an alien planet that allows for stronger, lighter exoskeletons. Any possibility will do to explain them.

If their exoskeletons were thinner, then they'd be entirely vulnerable to changes in temperature, physical blows, etc. A giant spider is next to an impossibility itself(unless the oxygen content of Nirn is HECKUVA high, of course), so them being in the cold isn't that big a stretch.

Again you're presuming that they're just like the spiders we know. It's an alien planet where anything can happen, especially when you toss in magic. Just because they happen to look like spiders, with 8 legs and compound eyes, doesn't mean they have to be exactly the same as the ones we're familiar with.

There's plenty of times earth is mentioned, but its in the 'four classical elements' context. As in earth is soil, makes up Nirn etc. Not "third rock from Sol" Earth. Desele's House of Earthly Delights, The Ritual of Earth, Earthtear Caverns etc.

You may want to keep in mind that the word "earth" is a synonym for soil, dirt, ground, and foundation of a world. Thus saying "What on earth?" is about what is on the earth. That has an entirely different contextual meaning. So no, that's not really baffling.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Xarnac while I was typing about Star Wars. Good examples, btw.

However, I can give you an example like that which truly is baffling - In Star Wars during Return of the Jedi and elsewhere, the 2 legged AT-ST walkers are called "chicken walkers". WTF?! Where is there a chicken in the Star Wars universe??? Aside from Robot Chicken, of course.....

Ha Ha. Bravo. In reality, I agree with the main post, but because this is fantasy, I can go with it.

It would be one thing to have giant Spiders in Black Marsh ( a place I never intend to visit anyway if I can avoid it. A festering, fetid, vermin infested swamp. . . keep it.) But in Skyrim? A frozen region in the far North? A place of LOOOONG, HAAARSH winters and short cool summers. . . who the hell was so desirous to see a spider that they stuck some in one of the last places in Tamriel you would ever expect to find them? They didn't inhabit Cyrodil, but they can be found in the farther North and Colder Skyrim??? Madness.

Spiders are the most successful predators on the face of planet earth. They can be found in all types of environments and biomes and you can find them on every continent except anarctica.

What that translates to is.

Spiders could be there.

Not Earth, and its a BIG ASS spider, thus has much more body heat, and they probably hibernate to.

And if you look close you can see it's http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/4272/spiderherosnuggie.jpg in the background.

Anyone notice that it is called a FROST SPIDER? Shouldn't FROST SPIDER live where it is Fu**in cold. Thats like saying a mermaid does not live in the water, or Dragonborn doesnt live in the Land of Awesome.

The thread should have been locked after this response. Epic.

Skyrim is in the North. It is NOT in the "far North." That's Atmora, an entire continent North of Tamriel.

A more logical response out of the nonsense on the first page.
Yes, Skyrim has cold tundras, but there are still areas with grass and dirt and life. Giant spiders, let alone small insects and bugs could still survive in areas such as caves.
Also, I believe it may be a "frost spider." :D

If you are interested in realism you should be more concerned with the fact the spider is a giant. Insect physiology couldn't support that much weight and size and would need to become some sort of mammal (which isn't the case presumably). Where they live is much easier to explain than what I brought up.
