The Great Khans...

Post » Mon Dec 07, 2009 10:56 am

The Great Khans are a tribe of raiders with a certain likenes to middleage mongols.
They are causing a mess in New Vegas just as they were doing in FO1.
They just ssem unable to play nice with other people, and I dont see an ingame way to civilize them.
So of the choices I seen, targetpractice is damn tempting.
What would you say?

I'd say this topic should be kicked to Spoilers section before I can say what I think.

They'll always be trouble. Always. But they're resilient as a people.

They are quite sensible for someone originating from the cluster[censored] of Vault 15. They are cool until they grow too big. I think trimming them down every once in a while is a good thing for the world - if they get too aggressive. If they sit in their villages and deal drugs, I don't care.

I'd choose another option: integrate them into society (I can't say "civilise" them, too many nasty undertones for me lol). I only saw them briefly in my last playthrough, but I managed to get them to start making medicine instead of drugs (which Motor Runner said cut them off a bit - definitely good), and help the NCR. It was a shame that horrible woman in the NCR wasn't as open to an amicable partnership as the Khans became. I haven't played the earlier Fallout games, but it seems to me that they've kind of shot themselves in the foot by trying to be the badasses of the wastes - something which would've helped before, but now that everything's settling down and societies are springing up, it only serves to isolate and damage them, which is something many of the Khans realise.

In FO1 they were mostly just chilling at their camp, the leader was bored of the girls he had and asked for the player to kill them.
They also kidnapped Tandi later on but they weren't that much of a problem.
The only people they ain't playing nice with is NCR and that's cause they [censored] them over in FO2 and [censored] them over at Bitter Springs again.
I've talked to them and they don't seem like that bad bunch of people.
I can just stroll on in without anyone putting a gun to my face so they're an allright bunch.
I never kill them, don't see the purpose for it.

I negotiated with them to make helpful Chems. Papa Khan likes me and so do the other people. It took a lot of work for that to happen. Now someone wants me to assassinate Papa Khan and I won't do it...so my game is at a halt until I can negotiate with Papa Khan...hopefully in the next patch. Life is hard in the Wastes and it's going to take everyone working together. There's room for everyone if everyone compromises a little. That's the goal anyway. :)

I think if people like Jack and Diane had more of a say in what the Great Khans get up too things would be better for them. I mean, Diane is just trying to make money for the khans so they can eat you know. And Jack... Well I love Jack, he's a cool guy that just does kind things. Doesn't hurt anyone. Especially since if you play it the good route you can easily get them both to start making helpful chems like Stimpacks to sell instead of just drugs.

The khans are good people, they're just in a tough spot and doing what they need to survive. They need some guidance from a friend they trust, once that happens I think they'll be all kosher :)

Why is your game at a halt? That's just the NCR path, the Colonel will want you to assassinate Papa Khan, but you can choose not to. There's no way to get the khans to ally with the NCR without killing PK. And that's not a bug, not going to be patched. If you choose not to kill him, they'll go on their happy way not allying with Caesar if you helped them out and showed them that Caesar is bad mojo.

That's how it's supposed to work, isn't it? We're supposed to speak to everyone we see in case it leads to something but there's a glitch in Oh My Papa that if you speak wtih Papa Khan early on, and I did before I got the quest, the speech option doesn't come back that let's you negotiate with him and/or the other Khans for an alliance. It's documented on Fallout.wikia.com too. I have Karl's Journal to show him but no speech option comes up for that either. You can negotiate with him with that. It was really disappointing that I couldn't finish my game and I'm in a holding pattern waiting for the patch because I'm not an assassin and I don't like the other paths in the game. Colonel Moore's speech options won't move on either. Also there's a problem if people do Khan Mellissa's quest beforehand but I don't have first-hand knowledge of that one. Many people have come to a dead-end on Oh My Papa. Hopefully the patch will fix this and we can finish soon. :)

You're on PC Kicenna?
When I did my NCR ending I'm sure I got the Khans to leave.
I had previously gotten Karl's book and they shot Karl up like swiss cheese when I showed it to Papa Khan, it was really kewl...
I had been through RedRock Canyon much earlier too - but can't remember if I spoke with Papa though.
Re: Melissa
I did have to use a console command (player.placeleveledactoratme) to gain her recommendation and then finish everything up.

Personally I won't do Mr.House ending because I must blowup BoS bunker (no options).
This despite standing in front of Mr.House a member of BoS. In power armor!
So I know what you mean.

Yeah, Pretty sure that's where it comes from. :P

There is alot of reference to old age musicians and pop culture in this game.

well if you want to lose one of the best ammo suppliers in the game i guess you can kill em, but i utilize their ammo merchant quite heavily and they have a lot of ammo for all the weapons pretty much, and thats a great ammo source early on in the game, so i never kill em, i do kill papa khan in order to get regis in charge so he allies with the NCr but other than that i leaven em alone and usually try to get on their good side.

I'm really looking forward to showing Karl's Journal to Papa. He's going to be one unhappy Khan. :D

We use Apple at work and I have a PC at home, but my FNV is on the PS3. I have Oblivion on PS3 and did get Morrowind for PC for my birthday but my PC skills are very rusty so I'll be in that forum asking for help when I start that game. Who knows? Maybe I'll like it better and then get the next Fallout on PC. :)

They should have shot the [censored], and made everyone's lives better.

In my current game I wiped them out because I was ordered to by the NRC Colonel, and also because it was Kahns that assisted Benny in getting the Platinum Chip from me and putting me in a shallow grave with a gunshot to the head.

I love the Khans, if I was to fufill my FO fantasy I would be one, but in FO1 they were so so, a one event drawn baddies at best, and in 2 they were still punks heavily into sixually assaulting girls, but allways could be talked down.
In NV at least the kicking's they had recieved made them less like sociopaths and more like a tribe looking to it's own interests, for the sake of a future for themselves and their families.

So all in all unless you're playing, a psychopath following mindless orders, any alignment of any character would not seek just to wipe them out imo.

In my last playthrough (Pacifist, NCR) I helped the Khans grow. I got all the people to speak against Caesar, and showed Papa Khan Karl's journal, forcing Karl to leave. Then I got the Mongolian History book from the Followers, and the slide said the Great Khans created a new empire in Wyoming.
