I used AP ammo and a service rifle. One lot got me pinned up against some rocks and there was like 5 or 6 giant rads and rads all going at me, so I switched to 10mm SMG and gave up on VATS, and chewed down drugs like there was no tomorrow, getting good and proper addiction there. Of course I had loads of them to go 'round, so I managed to survive...barely.

Is there anyway of getting to the valley and avoiding the giant rads? Or is that the only way.

If you think RadScorpions are tough - wait until you encounter 5 BoS Paladins! :P

I avoid BoS like the plague, so far.
I <3 rifles!
And I don't know. I got into Scorpion Gulch completely by mistake and nearly died (literally). It svcked. Now it's added to my list of 'never going there again' places, like Quarry Junction too....

ETA: I got into Scorpion Gulch when I was like, level 5 the first time around.
The even I spoke of in my previous post, happened while I was trying to complete 'Oh My Papa' Quest for the Kahns.

Sniper Rifle + .308 JSP ammo + Sneak = one-shot instakills on giant radscorpions.

If I reload with my last auto save is there anyway to reach the valley without encountering the giant rads? Where do you get fire axes from?

Enter it from the west - only bark scorpions. Just watch out for deathclaws along the highway.

Get a bigger gun, seriously. Something with "umph" behind it like a hunting shotgun with slugs.

There is a path where you can avoid the really nasty stuff. Start at the NCRCF and go to Hidden Valley from there. Only some Bark Scorpions (nasty in their own right) to deal with then. Powder Gangers as well but they shouldn't be a problem.

Tinkering around with a hunting rifle, loaded with JSP rounds, I was having no problems taking out Giant Radscorpians. Don't even have Entomologist perk yet on my level 11 character that has 60 skill in guns. Same testing session I was also hitting full grown Deathclaws for 75% of their HPs with sneak attack to the head. Toss in 100 skill and Better Criticals and they'll drop with a single bullet to the head.

LOL I was going to say the same thing.

If you can't get through the giant radscorpions you don't want to attempt to destroy the brotherhood yet.

Although there are other ways to hidden valley that don't go through giant radscorpions.

Actually, I have more trouble with 2 Giant RadScorpions then 5 Paladins.

There aren't any giant Radscorpions in Hidden Valley, and the only area I can think of is Scorpion Gulch (wonder why it's called that?). There are regular sized bark scorpions in Hidden Valley though. Lots of them.

Anyway, there are other ways of approaching Hidden Valley without having to go through Scorpion Gulch.

That's probably your best bet for now. You should be able to get there and only encounter a few Powder Gangers and maybe some feral dogs along the way. Come back to the gulch and clean out the radscorpions later, once you've leveled up and gotten some heavier hitting weapons with armor piercing ammo.

To me radscorps are generally slow. Usually i just strafe them with a melee weapon. If that doesnt work try jumping on a rock. I hear giant scorpians are bad climbers.

I fully endorse going from NCRCF. I didn't even KNOW there was another route.

You can also go in from the north and take out centaurs.

Hug the hill from Sloan you can get there relatively safe.

Or from Sloan, follow the small valley until you hit the Hidden Valley fence, then walk a bit North to which part of the fence is torn, or Fast Travel.
