Will New Vegas be better than FO3?

It's just an expansion that adds some gambling mini-games. I wouldn't bother.

Good Question.

Can't answer it yet, and I plan to take into consideration that Obsidian had a huge leap on Bethesda in that they started with a complete engine, Da GECK, and something approaching a million assets. If both companies are 100% equal in all ways, one would expect Obsidian to win huge given that kind of starting advantage (indeed they can directly address the problems people noted with Fo3, and have done so). If the comparison is done one a more granular level, such as comparing stories or music or level design, then it might be a little more even but Obsidian still has that incredible starting edge.

I really don't see how it could be considered a competition, Obisidian is taking the Fallout 3 engine/content to the next level. I hope it will be better just because of that, not because Obsidian is better than Bethesda at the root IMHO. But I suspect that Obsidian's reputation for character, dialogue and quests will really blow FNV out of the park for me, I like the darker, deeper story where gray is the dominant color.

Can you fill me in on who first made/designed/etc Fallout 3? Was it only Bethseda?

Because Fallout 3 felt exactly like Oblivion with guns but less people. and just focused on loot/killing enemies. Just felt all alone

If obsidian made kotor 2 then New Vegas would be a good game. if they teamed up with bioware would be epic.

Hmm got some wikipedia profiles of their past games

Eh? Yes Bethesda is the company that made Fallout 3 and Oblivion, but I don't think Oblivion felt like Fallout 3 at all. Yes the same engine was used, yes there are many similarities, but to say they are exactly alike except in population density is silly.

I felt that the base premise of game play in both titles was identical in every significant way.

fallout 3 awesome but it did have lots of shortcomings that needed improvement, so the SPECIAL, skill and perk ssysten were broken and there were no traits and the game was too easy after level 15 or so, way too easy, not matter what you did, you pretty much maxed out all skills and had tons of perks. so that just makes it too easy,, also there will be more quests in new vegas, bigger towns, just overall more to do, less destroyed areas, in FO3 it was just too destroyed, near graydtich and other areas, you couldn't go in near enough buildings, especially smaller ones, there were lots of big buildings like the capitol building or roosovelt academy but entire rows of townhouses and apartments and you couldn't go in any of em, entire areas where there were no small stores or anything to go into, the entire area from dukovs place to rivet city had no buildings to go into at all and the same with with the area near hubris comics and that entire area, not one store or shop to go into, so those details needed more. the big stuff was ok, but not enough small buildings to go into or use for housing etc.

Will New Vegas be better than FO3?

Since the mandatory use of Steam in NV, no it will be much worse.

I think that's unfair. Yes, I dislike the mandatory use of Steam and I think DRM in general is a horrible thing, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.

I expect New Vegas to be notably better than FO3. Even if they didn't change gameplay mechanics the better writting alone would make it the superior game.

New Vegas actually looks pretty new if you ask me. Same as all other games coming out this year: Medal of Honor - looks just like bad company 2, Black Ops - Modern warfare 2. But, what really matters is the gameplay, Fallout New Vegas looks like it's going to bring something fresh.

While I'm sure New Vegas will be better, more polished and bigger, I gotta dissagree with The OP on a couple of points. A lot of the side quests do change things in game. Granted, Not hugely or even obviously but the changes are there none the less.
EX1. Complete the Wasteland survival guide and suddenly your running into wastelanders who have and use the book you helped put together, (Not counting three dogs praise/condemnation of the book)
Ex2. Invest in the caravans and their stock will improve
Ex3. Conversations in Rivet City alter to reflect the completion of certain quests. (Temple of the union comes to mind.)
Ex4. Then there's all the New Enclave encounters as you progress through the main quest and start in on the DLC stuff.

To make a truly dynamic and reactive environment would require a true AI or a live Game Master. Programming can only do so much.

That said....
I do have High hopes for a bit more in New vegas as far as making an impact in the Mojave Wasteland in line with Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics.

That's true. It just feels strange to have pistols and miniguns covered by the same skill while a laser pistol is covered by a totally different skill. And for the record I already considered it strange to have Small Guns and Energy Weapons as seperate skills in the previous games.

Not at all. Lasers have no kick. If you're primary weapon is a firearm you will be over compsating for the non-existant kick of the energy weapon. Erg weapons don't have to comepsate for wind either. The Rationale is sound.

This should have been a poll.... anyway yeah Um.. I mean to be honest with you guys, I don't know what one will be better, I loved fallout 3, I REALLY LIKED FALLOUT 1, fallout 2 was good, and hopefully fallout new vegas will be amazing, I don't know though, if its just as good as fallout 3 then I'll be happy.

Good point, I never thought of that.

After playing the game at quakecon i have no doubts that NV will be a much better game than FO3.

well i think its good to give this thread a bump. lol

i got it via Steam i dunno if this will handicap me in anyway if i wanted to use mods / get DLC from a different source

this game seems a bit cliche and some of the factions seems rushed. come on now Caesar's legion? lol I was more expecting more Followers, Raiders, NCR type factions.

i have it on PC and its full of bugs hopefully in time bethseda fixes them up. a lot of quests are failing to trigger or complete itself forcing me to revert to an earlier save and approach it differently. i think its just scripting issues. like i enter an area from a different route so it didnt trigger the cutscene / random encounter.

i've gotten graphical bugs relating to the fast draw/reload perk. when i holster my weapon it doesnt holster correctly it goes like into my body.

the whole casino thing is a bit farfetched. my favorite part to explore was the khans and the brotherhood of steel

thought this game does obviously seem to been put a lot of work into it so i give them that. A for effort. the graphics are literally the same. HDR and bloom is really annoying. all this special lighting and dark effects to hide the true ugly graphics. go in your console and type in "TLB" and you'll see the true graphics after the lighting special effects are gone. story seemed a bit rushed and a lot of cliche from old westerns. but im not complaining still fun to play. one obvious one is the quarry junction. black mountain was fun to play. the whole casino thing seem like a way to distract people from the real game, cool bethseda put Hoyle Casino minigames in here. i didnt even touch the minigames, caravan was hard to understand as well lol. it seems they put a lot of thought into the gambling side of the game

i love the faction/reputation in this game, now my quests seem more meaningful instead of getting caps/items

framerate is horrible no matter which setting you put it at and my system could play mw2 and bad company 2 with no problem. turning off shadows / water effect seemed to help

you know what im already hoping for??? i really want a Rocky Mountain / Soviet / Chinese Communist / Yeti / Sherpa / Mormon Mountain Cult / type fallout.

a huge mountain range in the middle of the map full of different factions and their way of life untouched by the war. and settlers/refugees on either side of the mountains in small towns / trading centers. the usual fallout 3
and of course wars for land/resources and politics thrown in would make a good fallout

All those NCR troopers remarking on an nuclear winter had me thinking damn a winter fallout would be amazing

it'd be great if they can abandon the oblivion clothing system. if they could work on, gloves, right arm, left arm, headwear, face mask, shorts/pants, shoes/boots, etc
