The Cloak

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:11 pm

I don't know why but i have this thing for cloaks, and i've always wondered why could we never have a cloak to hide our armor and weapons. I think we always see characters in cloaks when we watch the pictures for games but when it comes to the actual game we are never given one. :pinch:
Specially if you make a shady type of character who sits in the corner of the tavern looking for information
But even for a armored character it would still be nice to hide your stuff under a cloak and then when battle comes reveal your self and your nasty big axe :chaos:

As much as I like cloaks, I wouldn't want them unless they could figure out a way to make them look good and move well. I don't want cloaks that look like they're plastered to my character, which is probably about all they could do without cloth physics (or a whole lot of crazy animation work that probably wouldn't be worth the effort).

You mean like how they had it in Morrowind days? That was alot of clothing we could carry in those days, a shirt, armour ontop and robes ontop of that.

I believe they eliminated it so we can't have all those enchanted in Oblivion. So my guess is no, but I would love to have it. It would keep us warmer if we did in the cold of Skyrim.

Cloaks, capes, and robes for milady. With and without hoods. By all means, yes.

Linen, satin, silk, fur, wool, and leather in a variety of colors.

Perhaps something with fur lining and trim for the colder regions.

I think it woud be beneficial for us if "they" would modify this forum into categories, so we can see discuss related items in a more organized manner. What we have now is very hodge podge.

Has there been an official word on if they are in or not? In the screenshot of the khajiit in front of the shrine of talos, talos is wearing a cape and in 2:01 of the trailer the hero is walking in riverwood with a much improved hooded robe of sorts so these things at least lead me to believe this option isnt out.

Yes and capes. But mantle style cloaks should be incompatible with bulky armour. I'll leave the definition of 'bulky' up to BGS.

Well you know thats there is different way to make cloaks be eyecandy then using resource hungry procedural animation from cloth simulation?
I mean they can be animated with cape bones and additional animation
for example thats old PS2 game Berserk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c-9JdUHYB0
Hairs and capes was animated without of any new technologies like Havok Cloth or PhysX, and they looks realistically
But also did you remember Liches in Oblivion?
They have animated robes and amulets (and cool hovering also B) )
They have similar to this skeleton
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/37596-1-1300222130.jpg
Modders before also try to make similar animated clothing for Oblivion but they encounter a problem
Oblivion has flawed animation blending as well lack of resources like time, tools, skills not allow achieve completely the same effect
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-RrLowTRlA
With new technology of havok behavior thats enchant animation blending and creating of new ones adding some additional bones to clothing and hairs can greatly increase visuals of game almost without loss of system resources, just imagine idle animation thats move hairs like in wind, clothing thats treble in jump and others.
Since such anims hand made there will no strange behavior like with procedural animations can eventually pop up, but animations will be not have variability as procedural anims have but does thats will so visible?

If they can nail the physics, then yes I would love capes/cloaks. I mean come on, your not a badass assassin without some form of black cape.

I'll join the band wagon. If they can pull off the fabric physics well, then yes, cloaks all the way. If they are static shells of cloth, then no.

i would love to have a cloak on my PC, adds to the customization and would add a nice look to a ranger, physics i don't mind. for the enchanting they could not allow cloaks to be enchant-able, i mean even i OB i was able to over enchant my stuff.

hoping they will bring more armor pieces back.

Cloth Physics or cloth animation?

Physics. A lot of what you do in the game is walk, sneak, and run around. I would prefer cloaks to be dynamic in any situation, not just under specific actions. If I'm going to cover my entire character with a uniform piece of cloth, then I'd like it to look as attractive as an intricate set of armor. Though, the intricacy of movements in the cloth would be the eye catcher, as opposed to the metal's sheen, engravings, and design.

Well, it's all but confirmed that there will be no hair or cloth physics. I'll be disappointed with yet another iteration of TES with no cloaks. I mean all clothes will be plastered to your body, anyway. I'd still wear a static stricken cloak.

Well, that's a shame. I always like the a game to improve upon what happens the majority of the time in game. Walking around in clothes is one of them.

That's my thought. Gameplay trumps graphics, but when you spend hundreds of hours looking at something, you want it to be the best it can. I'm sure that's what we're getting (consoles being what they are), but I still hope to see cloaks.
