I don't think grizzly bears live in the desert, so there was nothing that could mutate into a Yao Guai. So you'll have to play with Cazadors instead :D

Yao guai are native to Washington (capital wasteland) as far as I know. Fallout: New Vegas takes place on the *West Coast*, on the other side of North America. No Yao Guai here, never was.

I'd say they're probably not in the game because they don't live in the area where the game takes place. We must keep in mind that New Vegas and Fallout 3 take place on opposite sides of the United States, and in areas with different climates, which were home to different creatures. While some creatures have appeared in both games, of course, most of which are ones that were also in earlier Fallout games like radscorpions and deathclaws, tha doesn't mean that every enemy you fought in Fallout 3 will show up in New Vegas as well.

In any case, I don't expect that the Mojave has many bears in real life, and you can't have mutated bears, which is what yao guai are, without any bears to mutate.

They're mutated from the black bears that are native to the East Coast. It's highly unlikely you would have seen an identical mutation in any bears on the opposite coast (there ARE black bears apparently in the region that includes the Mojave, but I don't think it's enough to be a sizeable population). It's possible for other bears from the Northwest region/Yellowstone region to migrate down, but it's probably not too likely they'll head down towards a desert wasteland. And again, it's not likely they'll mutate to become the Yao Guai.

According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife website....

The American black bear is the only bear species occurring naturally in Nevada. Range includes mountainous areas and foothills of Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and nearby mountain ranges in extreme western Nevada.

Nevada's population of black bears is estimated to be around 200 animals. This relatively low number in combination with fragmented black bear habitat has led to the protected status of the animal in Nevada.

And a fun fact from the same website

Presently, the black bear is the only kind of bear in Nevada and California. Until the last century, there were also California grizzly bears. But, now the only California grizzlies found in California are on the state flag.

There could have been Yau Guais in the NW of the map where there are mountains and trees galore i.e., typical Yogi Bear country.

Their not on Fallout: New Vegas as there is or was no ideal habitat for bears before the war and as ToJKa said you will have to make do with Cazadors, hint bring anti-venom if they hit you, or you could go to Bonnie Springs and hunt Fire Geckos, Big Horners, Jackal Gang maybe some Deathclaw and NightStalkers around 11:00pm - 6:30am and if you have already been there you may find a cazador nest behind the most northern building but if not there are two jackal gang leaders the melee one has the Unique Weapon: Love & Hate and the other should have a trial carbine and don't forget the star caps that are there. :P

They're not in NV beacause people would just complain about NV being too much like FO3.

Fictional (but typical) ranter…

“Complaint number 1.111. More Yau Guai!?! Seriously? Could the devs not even be bothered to think of some new enemies!?! I didn’t pay good money just to kill the same stupid…”

yao guai over time could make their way to vegas. the game designers decided to add a few new nasties so they had to drop some of the old ones.

in short for the this time frame, the yao guai haven't spread out far as vegas. but who knows what the future will bring.

The only native Bear would have most likely been killed.

Y'all have to remember, most animals were killed in the Black rain after the War, a toxic hellstorm of radioactive dirt fired up from the huge blasts, that killed a huge amount of plant life. Most areas not sheltered naturally would have most of the plant and animal life killed. Only a few species got mutated, the rest just died. I doubt a endangered species like the Nevada Black bear would survive.

Anyways, the Yao Guai would not make its way over. Animals are not people, they will not move from place to place on impulse. Besides, Yao Guai would feel out of place in New Vegas. They are forest and mountain creatures.

Yao Guai are large, fast mammalian predators with high metabolic rates. They simply wouldn't be able to find enough food in the desert to survive, even if they tried to migrate there.

They were the only reason I got the animal friend perk. Everyother animal I could just beat to death. And to any trolls, deathclaws are not categorized as animals and thus were not affected by the animal friend perk or anything else animal related. Though it was fun watching the two of them fight to the death over me, the deathclaws trying to kill me and the yau guai trying to protect me, good times.

Possibly because despite the way its pronounced in game -by 3Dog for instance- (Ye-ow Gw-ai...or there abouts) There are some that are choosing to pronounce it as Yogi.
