Sneak Attack

Obviously it's not for a one on one attack. This is more towards killing someone metal gear solid status. His friends only a mere feet away, but because a carefully placed hand over a mouth silences his screams, they never even notice.

I don't recall ever screaming during a sneak attack. Only during power attacks. I've been using mods for ages though.

I did power attacks in Oblivion in sneak mode on the XBox and NEVER had my character yell once.

Wouldn't really matter if you yelled or not. You wouldn't have time to respond to the attack in any significant way.

That's simply not true.

It's true. I read just about every review that was posted here http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=427728
In one of the reviews, it mentioned that during the demo, Todd shot an arrow at 1 one of 2 bandits that were chatting inside the cavern. The other bandit just went "I thought I heard something" or something like that. No "smart" reaction like looking in the direction the arrow was shot from.

There really isn't enough time to decipher NPC's reactions to assassinations from that clip. In fact, it looks like the NPC sitting down flinches right before it shifts to the next scene.

There is definitely not enough not, people do not react instantly to things like that. There is a delay.

As for the demo there were conflicting views some saying it was better/fixed others that is was not.

I think as you begin to carry heavier-slower weapons that you should let out a grunt type sound while in a stealth attack. Until you master your weapon class + sneak then you shouldn't be able to hit someone with a 5 ton Axe that only a warrior carries and get away without being noticed.

But... remember the trailer? Where a player gets assassinated in front of everyone else in a tavern? Yet no one react? Some may say "more time was required for them to react" to that. But I say that if someone gets their throat cut right in front of you, you react pretty much instantly, especially if you're looking at that direction.

Maybe the AI isn't as improved as we thought... The scene in the dungeon from the demo might strengthen this theory as well.
Most FPS-games have some sort of dynamic AI system for hit-reactions and such. Skyrim should have the same but it kinda looks like the opposite at the moment.

It was a split second attack and we barely see it finish. The NPCs would not have had time to react.

As for sneak attack noises, I have never heard my character yell when sneak attacking.

No. That's ridiculous. 1. Not enough time 2. Why should they care? 3. Too stealthy in the edge of the darkness and obscured by the roaring fire in between

This. You DO NOT yell during ANY sneak attack. You are wrong, OP. Trust me, I've done more sneak attacks in Oblivion than I could even fathom, and I can test it again and again right now. Power attacks make the yell, and that's it. Sorry, cause if your game is different, it's not right.

Wrong. There are 2 articles that specifically describe the 2nd bandit reacting to the noise and going into immediate alert mode, and begin actively searching for Todd's PC, the culprit. I also understand the issues with the AI coming from OB, I assure you. But what I just described is brand new. No AI in OB ever did that. So there's one big change already. Anything else about that demo is speculation, since the details are not clarified.

what you labeled as "brand new", i've seen in oblivion. what i'm saying is not something like going into alert mode, the ai does that in oblivion too. sometmes.

if your buddy just got shot down by an arrow in front of you, will you just go into alert mode and wait for the perpetrator to try to sneak up on you? a real "smart" decision to make would be to FIND COVER and force the player to sneak closer instead of just standing there waiting for the next arrow to hit his neck. that was the issue i'm talking about that was mentioned in one of the articles i read.

Wait.. what? Your pc doesn't yell when performing a sneak attack, not sure what game the op thinks s/he's playing.
Secondly that half a second clip from the trailer is way to brief and vague to be used to judge npc reactions.

the guy that was killed was also standing in a poorly lit area, that can also be a factor . . . yes you can argue that its not exaclty pitch black but if they react itll do for me . . . im not going to count miliseconds that pass since action till reaction nor the photons that fall on the character being killed

Well...since the updated stealth system is brand new....arguably any new function the AI do to react to your stealth status is a new feature. And if you've seen that in OB, then you're lucky, because I never saw that, to my recollection, out of thousands of similar scenarios. I've seen them all come straight at you if the target isn't dead, and I've seen the guards go to check on a dead body and then begin wandering around, "searching", but I don't recall a random bandit or enemy react to the point of searching for me or even caring about the dead ally. It's funny that they made guards do that, but every other enemy or NPC has broken AI.....that's really weird, actually.

And yes, I agree with your suggestion. The possibilities for AI improvement in Skyrim are nearly endless. In fact, this is another good time to bring up Assassins Creed. The enemy AI in the AC games are perfectly designed for reacting to stealth combat from the PC. Copy and paste that into Skyrim and the complaints will disappear.

Yea, the scene in the trailer is way too short. For all we know the NPC's could have ran for help, or even attacked the pc after the clip transitioned to the next scene.

If Skyrim was realistic, anytime you attacked someone they'd just stand there and then pull out their cell phones and update their facebook/take video for youtube.

:blush2: Hmm, I would like to apologize, it appears as if some of my information was inacurate, let me set a few things straight. I retested it, and you do NOT yell when you do a power attack while sneaking in oblivion. HOWEVER, you do in fallout 3, and in fallout new vegas. It would seem I got a little confused( yall have pity though, they are made/published by the same people, they play almost exactly the same, and we all waste hours playing them  ). Never the less, I do not want this to carry over from fallout into skyrim. It would spoil sneaking.

^ ^ that sounds like it might be the case.
I can understand if an unheard/unseen arrow flies in and his buddy would be non the wiser, but for a person to be stabbed blatantly in your field of view and not react is ridiculous. Maybe there's a grace period, a short half a second to allow you to finish your fighting animation and be able to be back in a ready stance for his partner? Who knows, high hopes people, high hopes.

Yes enemies will go into search mode if sniped, they know they are under attack but can not see the attacker. Sneak in fallout was better than Oblivion.

That's a pretty bad clip to the judge the abilities of the AI. It's only 0.5 seconds long and the player didn't even cut the guys throat yet, he just reaches his arm around him (with the wrong side of the blade might I add).

Yes it was extremely hard to sneak kill one in a group even with ranged attack in Oblivion. It required a minimum distance.
However I doubt the AI is set to ignore the attack, that might happen in Oblivion if the relations npc liked you and disliked the target and they had low respect for the law.

perhaps they have added a reaction time to a sneak attack, npc use a fraction of a second to understand what is going on, pretty realistic and give you a fraction of a second you can use to cast a spell or do a follow up attack.
