A good number of very mean rats that can kill you in 3-4 hits. Your 9mm SMG and several hundred round of ammo will be your best friends. Leave ED-E outside as he'll just go pick a fight and get killed quickly.

Quicksave before going into the Cave. Pretty good chance you'll die once, or twice.

Yes, the gun is worth it. It's a very discrete way of removing humanoid enemies with HP rounds to the head.

What to expect? Bunch of rats and some low radiation. Easiest done with a big shotgun and some sneakiness. You could just pop a Stealth Boy, go right on every turn, don't fall down off the ridge, pick the gun lying next to the desk and snipe rats from above after you've got the gun.

Animal Friend perk has made some caves a walk in the park. If you have that, just wear a radiation suit and you can leave your weapon unequipped.

The Rat Slayer is awesome, especially at the start of the game. Even later though, you can kill most human targets with a sneak attack to the head with the correct ammo.

I keep finding two rats in the room that Ratslayer is found in though. And yes, they do hit awfully hard for giant rats, and push you back. The first time I did that, I wasn't expecting it and they shoved me right off the ledge into the rest of the nest of them... Things got a bit frantic then. But the Ratslayer is much nicer than a standard tricked out varmint rifle, and well worth the effort. Also note that, if you took the Wild Wasteland trait, they won't be just giant rats, but Rodents of Unusual Size. (ROUS's? I don't think they exist...)

I went through around level 8 and had tons of trouble (I was on hardcoe and Hard though). Once I got the Ratslayer I just sniped the rest of the dumb rats so after that I was good, ha ha.

The Rats in there are surprisingly tough. I died in there wearing combat armor, and wielding knock knock. Don't let the rats corner you, or gang up on you. They will rip you a new one lol

I went in with Ed-E and Boone. While they did end up starting fights, it actually helped me. Apparently whoever starts shooting first is who they attack. I sat back a ways, hidden, while they were attacking my 'friends' and spammed them with random head shots. Add that to the damage being done by hunting rifle and laser and they went down fairly well.
I did have a couple of them come up behind me but having already been there on an earlier play-through I had left a couple of mines on my back trail to greet them. Boom (hey, dude, somebody is coming up behind you) Boom (and they are limping).

Worked for me. I wanted that gun, and all the loot.
