Skyrim official PC Discussion

Post » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:49 am

Ok, so im sure there are a decent amount of PC gamers out there. By my understanding Skyrim is based on DirectX9 which was amde like in 2001-2003. It is much older than DirectX10, which was mad ein 2006 and DirectX11 which is made in 2009 and which companies are using now. My problem is, RPGs are made for PC, so why is Skyrim using the outdated DirectX9 for their main engine. Shouldnt they use DirectX11 as their main engine particle instead of DirectX9 from 2006? I m not trying to do a console war, but what do all of you guys think about this? Also DirectX11 is CrossfireX and SLI compatible. Will Skyrim include SLI and CrossfireX compatibility? This way PC gamers could really max out graphics. Thats the reason I bought a PC for in the first place, not to just have my XBOX's graphics. Why spend $2,000 for a PC when I could spend $150 for a XBOX. What do you guys think?

I can smell a crapstorm in the winds today.

It better be xfire/sli compatible!! But this also will have a lot to do with the drives on nvidia/amd's side I think.

IIRC it was already confirmed that Skyrim will use DX11. But not to its full extent.

I don't care about graphics, I want my game to run smoothly, DirectX9.

Indeed. It'll likely make use of DX11's improved optimization, but will still use DX9 shaders.

@RedKool8: DX11 runs more efficiently than DX9

Having seen how poorly DA2 used DX11 (let's not get into the whys and wherefores of the game itself, that's a different matter entirely, and not for this forum) and how many problems it caused for users while not providing any major noticeable benefit in terms of graphics, I am happy enough that Skyrim is using DX9.

Given that Skyrim has been in development for years, I wouldn't want them to rush to get it fitted in at this late stage of development and have it cause a load of problems. I think it's only something like 10% of PC gamers have a DX11 compatible graphics card at this moment in time according to Steam surveys - so that would be around 2% of the total market for Skyrim - not worth making a huge effort for at this point, despite a vocal minority demanding it.

What I would like is if they released a hi-res texture pack for free download to PC users.

should, would, could? i don't care. as long as I can tell what I am looking at I am fine. graphics could be the same as OB and I would still play if they used to money and effort to add more content instead (I know thats not how it happens) but other wise better graphics are just a bonus/perk. I have no idea what the difference is between the two and imo it doesnt matter.

Because Skyrim is made for PC, XBox, and PS3. :thumbsup:

besides, usually developers push their games to have the best graphics and use the latest cards or whatever to promote the idea that their game is better than the rest, TES doesn't need to do that they have proven themselves thus far and improving graphics is just them improving the game, not trying to make it the flashiest to compensate for what the game doesn't have. if having DX9 instead of 11 means the game is more acessable, what do you think they will do.

Play on the platform you personally enjoy.

Bethesda has said it will be released for pc, 360, and ps3, so it has to be compatible with all of them.

Threads like this don't usually go well.
