What will you focus on when you create your character?

Hello there!

First topic in the forums (yay!)

Today I was considering the many ways in which one can create a character.

One way (first option in the poll) is to try to be as optimal as possible.
Optimal here means to start by picking an archetype (let's say mage), then choosing the most gifted race in such archetype (Altmer most likely) and finally proceeding to use only the skills that suit this race better (the 6 magic schools) and the perks that enhance those skills the most.

A completly different way to play is to pick the race that is more attractive to you and then use those skills that better adapt to your gameplay even if they don't really suit the race you've chosen (if for instance you love Altmers and sneak, going for an Altmer assassin with (barely) no magic)

These are just the two ends of the spectrum so, yes, I'm sure there are all kinds of compromises in between. What I'm interested in though is which one of these two ways of building a character you feel more identified with.

In my case, I'm more fond of the second option!

Tiny Lampe.

I got bad news for you, all you get to pick is race and appearance. Everything else is determined as you play.

Ups! Perhaps I should have been clearer on that...

I do know that everything besides race and appearence is determined by your playing style. However, this doesn't really affect this question. If you want to play an optimal offensive pure mage you will choose altmer and then only use (I said choose but I meant use) the 6 magic schools. Finally you will pick the relevant perks. See? no difference.

Poll edited though. Thanks ;)

Ah well in that case I'll probably just let the chips fall where they may and make it up as I go along. First play through is going to involve a lot testing to see how various systems play.

Typically, I'll chose a set of skills I feel like they'd be fun together and play using just that and try to overcome the game challenges. Nothing trying to be optimal or the like. On the other hand, the player building itself will try to be made optimal with perk choice and equipment combinations.

My first class I will probably stick to more of what I am used to but stray a bit to test this new system of leveling up and perks. I will try to be creative though.

Yeah. Same here to some extent.

There are some skills that I know I'll be using: sneak and elemental destruction magic for sure. Bow and dagger are also likely. Beyond that though, I don't know; some telekinesis could be awesome if it was more combat oriented this time (Bioshock-style).

We'll see.

That's basically me xD. I was playing an assassin in oblivion last time I played, and at this point sneakng and backstabbing feels so natural to me that I doubt I can change significantly. I'll be using desutruction magic though. Being able to use the same spell to cast a fireball a flamethrower or even an elemental fire trap is just too awesome to ignore it.
