Sneaking help.

Post » Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:28 am

I always play as a sneak character. And I'm usually pretty good at it. However, in this game I've had a lot of trouble sneaking up on anyone. Right now my sneak is at 70, I'll have it at 100 soon but I cannot for the life of me sneak up on many people/enemies. Is there a trick to this in New Vegas?

What Agility do you have?
Do you have Light, Medium or Heavy Armor on you?

Hmm.
Maybe the enemies Perception is really good.
But since this game has more "horde" enemies it can be harder to sneak.
Try to get binoculars and a scope on a laser/varmint/hunting rifle.

Its not a problem of seeing/finding my enemies first. I can usually do that. It is a problem that I literally can't sneak up on them. My status always changes to [CAUTION] to [DANGER] before I can get close enough to kill them. Pretty frustrating so far. Hopefully when I get to 100 this won't be a problem.

Use Stealth boys and stick to the shadows. If the enemy is facing you FREEZE! Also if you're on PC, go to Display options menu and set Actor Fade to full, that allowed some pretty darn impressive long-range sniping in Oblivion :D I don't have the game yet, but those helped in 3, also isn't the Hei Gui armor (aka Chinese Stealth Armor) in this game too?

Weird. I have 7 in Sneak and 1 Agility and wear Medium Armor and can sneak like 25 meters from them without getting noticed.
Can't help you though.
Maybe you should stockpile on Stealthboys.

Sneaking factors:

Sneak skill (obviously)
Apparel weight (heavier apparel will make you easier to detect, weapons also add to this if they are not holstered)
Move speed (walking is better than running, negated with Silent Running perk)
Line of sight
Light (PipBoy light will make you easier to detect as will being in bright areas)
Contact (touching someone will instantly alert them that you are there)
Sound (shooting loud weapon will make you easier to detect)

So basically keep your PipBoy light off, your weapon holstered, walk if you dont have silent running and try to stay out of line of sight. Also if possible wear no/light apparel.
