running off deathclaws : Fallout: New Vegas

In my second game I happened upon the place coming from the east. From the cliffs I was able to snipe quite a few of them without VATS. In sneak mode with a silencer they seemed to not be able to zero in on my location so the picken was fairly easy. After killing all I could see I moved in a little closer and took the rest. If you can get close enough to that hopper thats up against the cliffs it's a great sniper position. If you want to try another trick, use a stealth boy and leave a trail of mines going up the ramps to the hopper then get their attention. Any time I'm going strictly for head shots I use hollow points.

Anti material with incendiary work great, too. If your sneak and crit is high you can pick them off very easily as it often takes 3 good shots to dropem.
They can def one hit you if you get flanked. I can't even use VATS with sniping rifles as the accuracy always svcks opposed to hard scoping. It's a shame the AI is SO stupid, they never path for you if you're far enough away.

the second time i did this the alpha male spawned at hidden valley. i got lucky. i was lvl 13 and he got stuck between some rocks. i killed him with the 10mm pistol. for the mother i waited til i was lvl 30 and killed all of them with the anti material rifle and armor piercing rounds.

During my first playthrough the Alpha Male Deathclaw was oddly stuck in the middle of the central tower in quarry junction.

what level were you when you did this? do you remember what guns you used, companions you had, or any specific way you did it?

I've done it twice.

First time, level 23 or so, energy weapons build (SO gimped for fighting DCs until the next patch) using plasma caster and plasma defender, Boone and ED-E as companions. Plasma mines helped, so did my powered armor (there's no one around out there so I could put on my BoS armor without getting shot at).

Second time, level 25. Guns build using an AMR and a light machinegun. Raul and ED-E as companions. headshots at max distance from the great khan encampment side of the area (NOT the sloan side) so they had to run up the cliffs to me, sniped everything I could see, moved in slowly, alpha male jumped me (he's a fast bugger!) so I let him have it in the legs with an LMG then the head.
