Point-and-click item dropping

Post » Tue Feb 16, 2010 7:27 am

Simple enough. In Morrowind (yeah yeah I know), one dropped items by clicking their icon and then clicking outside of the inventory window. What was nice, however, is that these items would be plopped down exactly where you clicked (assuming you were in range of them). It made decorating houses and the like nice and simple. Whilst I'm sure that the grabbing mechanic of OB/FO3 will continue to be improved in Skyrim, I personally would love it if we still had the option to place items in the world with great precision by simply clicking - as opposed to having to deal with the cumbersome physics while trying to drag the stubborn book or piece of pottery up onto the shelves.

It's a moot request, and with the new (seemingly) full-screen menu system I don't see it happening, but does anybody else miss this?

I compeltely agree. I'd also love to see the physics toned down, or even have an option to turn it off completely. I hated walking into a room and causing a mini-tornado.

It wouldn't work as well as might think with the physics...

Physics = Endless fun. I'm hoping to see more physics, moving furniture and more ragdoll effects in mid-combat.

This wouldn't mean the end of physics - I'd just like to be able to place items instantly whilst paused in the inventory, instead of handling them in realtime. :)

The problem with how you handled items in Oblivion and Fallout 3 is that they weren't actually "clutched" in your hand - they were able to flail around wildly along their three axes. It's as if the point you "grab" them on has a stick stuck through it, and all of the item's movement occurs around that point. Half-Life 2, though dated, at least had the items mostly locked into position when held as if you actually had hands holding them in place, and not running around like some lunatic with arms made of rubber and no wrists/elbows to limit your movement.

Yeah, that would be a good feature.
