The chants in the Skyrim trailer

Post » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:58 am

Hey!

Like many of you i have been antecipating this game and i've watched the trailer a few times.

When i was watching i wondered what those cool chants in the trailer really were saying. As i tried to listen more closely i started to understand a few words and those words were making alot of sense as the chant went by.
The chants sound like old portuguese peotry and accents. Upon listening to the whole thing careful this is what i found the lyrics to be:

(it starts after dovakhin shouts at the dragon)

Vei de lá, povito cromanh?,
encostado à terra, à cruz.
Mas, sem sorte consigo
parar de gritar:
Dovahkin, dovahkin
n?o me sinto sorrir,
ou andar como tu,
a ver a vida a passar.
N?o me consigo explicar,
n?o me consigo ousar,
Dovahkin, dovahkin,
vou-te ajudar.

The translation to english would be something like this:

Come forth common people (cromanh? is a way of saying simple people)
laying near the earth and the cross. (this says they are close to the land and are religious)
With no luck,
can i stop shouting: (its a backwards way of saying i cant stop shouting - doesnt really work well in english)
Dovahkin, dovahkin (this word i think bethesda made up)
i dont see myself smile,
or walk (in) life like you.
I cant explain (it),
i cant dare (it),
Dovahkin, dovahkin,
i will help you.

Now either this can be an incredible coincidence or it can be the real case. Would be cool to know, but at any rate here it is for you guys to see.

Bethesda made up the language in the game, i dont know if the group that made the song for it is actually chanting that language or not.

I did know at any rate, but i do believe this to be the case. If its not then its a cool coincidence they should know about.

And try to actually listen and compare before you give that kind of answer. I'm not asking you to mesure my inteligence, im asking you to listen to it and see. Youre free to disagree afterwards.

The chant is in the dragon language. The UESP has the translation on the Dragon Alphabet page.

No, that's another part using the Dovahkiin chorus motif. You don't ever actually hear it in any of the trailers but they released the lyrics.

Hm, nice to know what they were chanting in the trailer.

The english words:

Dragonborn Dragonborn
By his honor is sworn
To keep evil forever at bay
And the fiercest foes rout
When they hear triumph's shout
Dragonborn for your blessing we pray

And the scrolls have fortold
Of black wings in the cold
That when brothers wage war come unfurled
Alduin bane of kings
Ancient shadow unbound
With a hunger to swallow the world
