Small skirmishes & battles with NPCs

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2010 1:17 pm

I personally think it would be quite epic if they were to implement the occasional small scale battle, possibly similar to Mount & Blade. I remember there being one small battle near the end of Oblivion's main quest but it was somewhat... lackluster. I know these battles would have to be small, due to technical limitations (ahem, Xbox), but it might be possible if kept under 20 men.

Wouldn't it be glorious to charge into a viking battle, one Nord clan against another ?

It would be a nice change of pace to see others fighting each other or NPC's hunting animals/fighting for survival

Dragon Shouts would make large encounters like that epic.

Imagine being swarmed by 5+ NPC's and then using the "force push" shout.

There's a civil war going on so I would imagine taking part in a few battles throughout the main story.

I mentioned this in my "Random encounters" thread, but I honestly think this would be a FANTASTIC idea! It could be what NV SHOULD have been, with columns of soldiers being ambushed by bandits or the opposing half of the civil war, or bandits raiding towns with battles starting between them, the guards, and some random citizens that are handy with swords or bows. I would be disapointed if none of this was in

I love any game that can make random encounter battles for the player to join in on.

NV's battle was awesome compared to Oblivion's.

I always liked the large scale formation of battles from dynasty warrior type games. I don't really see that happening in ES cause for battlefield type stuff to work without getting zerged the character has to be significantly stronger than the mob he's facing I don't think skyrim is going that route.

I would like to see battles between guards and bandits on the roads or in the towns, not just 1v1 though, maybe something like 5v5. It would be fun to watch.

Too bad there won't be any large scale battles (more than likely). IT would fit in SO well too with the civil war going on.

I already know there will be. They said NPCs could also fight over a dropped item. As for large scale battles maybe not.

Why did this make me think of Mount and Blade?

Using the main quest Bruma battle in OB as a guide, I would guess the biggest battle you see in Skyrim will be about 2 dozen men.

The thing is... Playing oblivion, once I got to a higher level and started getting really good stuff, any quest that involved someone coming with you, they would come in to the area with me and almost immediately get killed. Especially when I'm trying to sneak. I do not like having to go back to the quest giver and say " your son/comrade/business partner is dead. Because then they go " well since you couldn't save him here's half of what I would've given you." And thats dumb. Especially if its someone important and the die or i constantly have to deal with a message saying "John Doe is unconscious." Taht annoys the hell out of me, plus on top of ALL of that, in oblivion they COULD NOT be quiet! They alerted the enemies EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! However, if random npc's were just randomly fighting in the forest and I could go in when they were done and pick up there stuff, that would be cool.

Yeah, but in this case NPCs should fight differently from how it was in TES4
Less running around and more combating an enemy, blocking and parrying attacks
Otherwise it will be clash of morons (a.k.a not worth of implementing)

That dream is precisely why I can't wait to buy Mount and Blade: Warband. :mohawk: (I'm not one of those people saying Skyrim can't have something because another game does, I'm simply expressing genuine excitement for a new game.)

You should buy it! I bought it off Steam on for 10$ under a week ago, the sale still might be on. I've been playing it on normal difficulty and I'm getting destroyed, but it's good fun. Kingdom of Nords ftw!

Don't know why you'd call it a new game though aha

I prefer physical copies of games. About it being a new game, however, it's just because I haven't played any Mount and Blade game, before. I had a blast with the demo yesterday night, however, and want to buy a Mount and Blade game. I heard Warband was the better of the two.

I know what you mean, but you'll be hard pressed to find a physical copy in North America. As far as I know Steam is the only way to buy it here for some reason. And yes, I'd definitely say go with Warband.

I found a copy at my local Best Buy just a couple weeks ago. I hope it's still there. Speaking of surprise finds, however, I found an unopened, unused copy of Fallout 2 (just Fallout 2, not the trilogy pack) at the same Best Buy.
