Swallowed into Skyrim

Post » Mon Mar 08, 2010 12:40 pm

Well, just decided to share the thought and see if others do the same, and if not, to see if i can give you some ideas.

How am I gonna play skyrim - recently, ive decided to pretend that in the moment skyrim will start running I will be the player inside. No, im not talking about role playing a character but im talking about role playing myself. Ignoring reality, I will pretend i was swallowed into the game just in the minute i started playing, and i will explore this glorious land as dovahkiin, as myself!

---

Decided to post it to share the idea, i know im not the first who is roleplaying himself. But I think there is much of a difference between people who roleplay what they WANT to do and call it "roleplay myself" between people who would do exactly what they would do if they were the character.

Hope I inspired / bored / made you feel something strong enough to leave a comment ;)

It's an actual product you can buy, might help to get svcked into the game. If you can throw away 40 grand and your social life, that is.

I always play as myself. That's the beautiful thing about first person and for those times when I'm forced to see myself i try to make my character looks as much like me as possible. Even if i can't change my appearance I still play my character through my own perspective and just ignore my appearance when i'm forced to see it as long as it's minimal which means any 3rd person only game is out of the question for me.

Not really the way I'd like to play the game myself. The appeal of role-playing for me is in playing a character that is not me. That's not to say I never put aspects of myself into my characters, but that only makes it easier for me to role-play them, in they're still character's other than myself, and it's the ability to create a character who is different from myself and can do things I can't do in real life and to play that character that is part of the appeal of an RPG. I play my own role all the time in real life, I don't need to do it in games as well. Besides, I really can't see my real life self being an amazing hero who fights dragons and saves the world, and that's not low self-esteem talking there, it's just me being realistic, even if we were to assume a hypothetical situation where there are dragons in real life to fight, I'm simply not the sort who would be suited for the task, thus, I don't think my real life self would be a suitable character for Skyrim.

In a way, I sort of think of it as being kind of like an actor playing a character, disregarding the cases where actors essentially play themselves, the actor and the character are not meant to be the same person. Obviously, we're not meant to think of the person on the screen as whoever the actor is, but whatever the character is called in the story. The character's personality, behavior, beliefs and all that may not necessarily match those of the actor, and what he or she does in any given situation may not be what the actor would do if such an event ocurred in real life, thus, the actor is not truly the same person as the character, but he or she has the job of bringing that character to life and making the character seem like a real person, rather than a lifeless model of one, the actor is temporarily playing the role of a character, in an RPG it's similar, of course, there are still a few key differences, such as the fact that, at least in the Elder Scrolls, the character is created by me, I'm not just acting based on a script someone else wrote, and while the game's story and gameplay is likely to constrain what I can do in the game, when I do get the choice, I'm the one to decide what I do, based on what fits how I intend to play the character I created. Aside from that, an actor's job is ultimately to tell the story for the benefit of the audience, whereas I role-play for my own entertainment, but in the end, at heart, it's still a matter of inserting myself into the role of someone I am not.

Not that there's really anything wrong with role-playing as yourself, if that's a play style you feel you can enjoy, then go ahead, it's just not how I'd want to play the game, if I'm going to go out of my way to role-play, I want to do it as someone I can't be in real life.

I'm going to play an imperial who was orphaned when he was 11 and ran away to woods near his town where he knew there was a clan of traveling wood elves who had to leave their last home due to a vampire infestation nearby.
they didn't take him in at first but he was determined to help them with their everyday chores and they didn't have the heart to let him go without eating

after about a month they took him in as their own. the tribe shaman took a liking to him, his magical ability, and wit. the shaman wasn't able to officially take him in as an apprentice but he taught him some spells here and there and gave him full access to the shaman's library. he spent a lot of time reading their lore and he took to their ritual religious practices

he felt like somewhat of an outcast at times but he was generally excepted and quite popular among the elves. he generally liked his life there. he had certain friends who looked up to him in the tribe. he often told them fake stories about life as an imperial and they were fascinated by this. he was in love with the leader of the tribe's daughter but when he tried to court her, he was distraught over this. he realized he couldn't have a life with the elves and, at that point, he didn't want one anymore.
he poisoned the water of the young elf who was to court the leaders daughter and he convinced two of his more unpopular elvin friends to leave with him and kill the tribe leader. one of the friends was able to get the leader alone and into a trap they planned. in the struggle, one of his friends was killed but he managed to stab the tribe leader with a poisoned dagger enough to kill him

he then approached the leaders daughter to leave with him (he did not tell her what became of her father) and when she denied him, he took his anger out on his friend on the form of a destruction spell just before he did the same to her.

he set out on a 2 day journey to Cheydenhol where he would trade the rare stones he had stolen from the tribe shaman for a one way passage to Skyrim. he has heard much about the place from the shamans books and he wanted to get far away from Cyrodil. he was a young (19) skilled mage and he was determined to enjoy the new life he was going to make for himself. he had tasted blood for the first time and he knew he liked the feeling. as he left on the spice cart headed to Skyrim he smiled to himself. if it weren't for the two gaurds he would have made quick work of the merchant once he got far enough, and enjoy the rest of the ride himself. but the guards looked like they could handle themselves and he still had much to learn in the way of combat. there would be time enough for that later. besides, he still had a bit of poison left

Can anyone say that if they themselves were svcked into Skyrim that they'd go toe-to-toe with a dragon? Or willingly enter a damp and dark cave where you know dozens of fearsome creatures wait to separate your spine and your skull? I'm not a cowardly person but in a world like that soiling myself would be routine. If we played as ourselves I don't think any of us would ever finish the main quest, or leave the village. I can understand wanting to play a "style" that reflects us and making moral decisions as we would in real life, but beyond that I think we have little choice but to play as a character that reflects us. Otherwise the world would crumble around us. It's easy not to fear death when it's only one saved game away.

Anyways, if any here can truly play Skyrim as themselves then you have my sincere congratulations. I always do at least two playthroughs and one is who I'd like to be (demi-god and the saviour of man/womankind) and the other as a reflection of myself. I also do the reflection second because it is usually more difficult and yields fewer rewards (no stealing or murder, sigh) but I think both styles are very fun to play.

I know what you mean and I did think about it before. but the world will rest up on our shoulders. If I had the chance to save the world from dragons I totaly would.

P.s tho, i probably wont join the fighters guild, and will NOT join any of the assassins guild. I wont riskl my life for nothing, im no hero and my little greed doesnt worth the pain. But when it comes to getting invincible powers. or saving an entire population - i might consider risking myself.

I'm not going to play myself. Else I would be wandering around town, picking up interesting rocks, reading and writing stories, hanging about, procrastinating on my College of Whispers assignments, and not helping random civillians or fighting dragons or ending up in jail.

P.s. I stepped off the army tho, doing national services instead. Shooting people and getting into politics isn't my thing.
