Actually a form of "news broadcast" isn't so far fetched.
Before the invention of the Web, TV, and Radio, there were town criers, who where the primary means of news communication. According to Wikipedia this practice dates back all the way to Medieval England.
The HBO series "Rome" had one, not sure if they actually had them in actual Roman times, but I wouldn't rule out the idea.
Course you wouldn't be able to hear them out in the middle of nowhere.
