Well .. if you are not running mods or anything.

Stealth - Bosmer, Khajiit, Argonian

Magic - Altmer, Breton

Combat - Nord, Orc, Redguard

All arounder - Imperial (kinda), Dark Elf

As far as just being the most powerful, I'd say Breton for all of them. The magic resistances benifits all classes and any slight deficiencies can be overcome during leveling.

Short term o long term?

In the short term it's whichever race has the higest skill bonuses (Breton for magic, Bosmer for stealth, Orc/Nord for combat). In the long term Bretons are the best for everything. That 50% Resist Magic is just plain awesome and you build up your main attributes to 100 in any case.

It's very hard to argue with a Breton born under the Mage for a long term high level success story. One little ring and you are immune to magic, you have plenty of magicka, regenerate it quickly and you can, like any race, max the attributes and stats that are important to you.

For similar reasons, I think an Altmer born under the Atronach is a superb long term choice as well. Two little items and you are immune to magic, you have more magcika than a Breton but have to embrace stunted magicka as the price (easy to do at mid/high levels). It really boils down in this case as to how much you like the Atronach - I have grown to like it quite a bit.

Note, I'm not arguing that an Altmer is better than a Breton, and this is really an academic discussion. I pick race based purely on the image and look that I want. My girl is a Bosmer Atronach and I'm crazy about her. :P

Why do people continue to label them as Bosmer or Altmer when they are clearly named otherwise ingame..

"Bosmer" and "Altmer", and while were add it lets bring in "Dunmer" are the traditional names of the races. "High Elves" and "Wood Elves" and "Dark Elves" are just a term coined by the other races.

You may call them what you like and might consider extending that same open-minded courtesy to others.

At any rate, you should be aware that the perfectly acceptable alternate terms are extremely well documented in TES lore. The following quotes from UESP wiki merely scratch the surface:

In the Imperial tongue, the haughty, tall, golden-skinned peoples of Summerset Isle are called High Elves, the Ayleid referred to them as Salache, but they call themselves Altmer, or the "Cultured People."

The Bosmer are the various barbarian Elven clan-folk of Valenwood, a forested province in southwestern Tamriel. In the Empire, they are often collectively referred to as Wood Elves, but "Bosmer", or "the Tree-Sap People", is what they call themselves.

In the game, have you not heard the rumors that the Altmer have extremely powerful wizards? Or about troubles in the land of the Dunmer?

For an Imperial, it would be perfectly natural to tend to use the high elf / wood elf type terms. My character is a Bosmer however, and it is equally natural for her to tend to use the traditional 'mer' terms that her kind have always used. :)

Please don't make more than one thread to say the exact same thing. :toughninja:
