What's with the Ravens?

Post » Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:51 am

Every so often I see ravens standing about and can be shot for 1xp an no lootable body and if they fly away they are gone forever. Why are they here? My guess is that is serves as a trail to New Vegas.

I think they're just there for atmosphere - although sometimes they mark corpses which may or may not have stuff on them.

Yep, happens to me all the time too. I shoot every one I see now just in case there's some sort of achievement. That and they tick me off.

Killing them counts toward the kill count challenges.

Some people griped that FO3 lacked birds and other creatures that didn't immediately try to rip your face off. So now we have crows that fly around, and little fishes in some of the lake areas. I enjoy the presence of non-hostile creatures. Coyotes, bighorners, and some geckos leave you alone unless you get too close. Helps my sense of immersion.

Nope, only humans are marked as "good", they're marked neutral so they won't net you bad karma.

Is there a perk associated with killing the ravens?

Personally, I think there's no point to them. I've never found them to make way to a safe path of anywhere (I commonly find them around things that are entirely NOT safe, including raiders and giant ants) and they're just here because they make the game better. And also,

Define "associated"? Do you mean like giving you an extra million Xp every time you kill a raven or having Karma linked to killing them??

To my knowledge, no and no.

I was thinking more along the lines of being able to summon a horde of undead crows in VATS in the same manor as the Mysterious Stranger appearances.

I always thought they would give you away when you were sneaking. I always avoid them when I'm approaching enemies in Stealth.

I murder them all because I don't like them to tap tap tap on my Presidential Suites window and doors.

I love that the birds actually land in New Vegas. You could see birds flying overhead in Fallout 3, but none ever came close to the ground. This adds to the realism, and also to the atmosphere. It feels a little more lonely out in the wastes when you try to find the friendly person on the radar and it turns out to just be an animal flying away.
