Which is the best weapon for followers?

Post » Thu Mar 25, 2010 11:34 am

Never give your companions unique weapons. I've read way too many stories on here about companions throwing them away, having them shot from their hands, having casinos take them and never return them, or simply having the weapons disappear from the game randomly. Trust me on this don't take any chances, just equip them with the generic versions of the weapons.

I liked the 5.56 carbines early on, for companions, but later they seemed less effective especially over long distances. Don't they have a bigger spread or something? I couldn't find enough 5.56 AP rounds to keep companions well stocked either. Seems like lots like to use them tho, maybe I'll have to try 'em again.

You can just use surplus ammo with companions if you have trouble keeping them stocked. Since weapons don't degrade for companions there's no downside to arming them with this, it does a little more damage too.

5.56 ap is rare only got like 2kap 8k normal 5.56/I usually give the inaccurate followers light machine gun/what ever weapon they are supposedly godo with/if it works in tandem with lmg such ass cassidy with her short range and raul and his slightly craptastic *pistolero* skills .tbh why the **** would they include a pistol user in a game where their is obviously better equipment, such as this machine gobi/genric sniper rifle/riot shotgun and if ur lowly lvl cowboy repeater

I guess it felt like since the AP was so rare, the non-AP .308 was more effective than non-AP 5.56 even with a slower fire rate. I did like This Machine.

raul and his slightly craptastic *pistolero* skills

What I don't like about pistols/non-rifles with companions is the AI scripting for how they use them...after a few moments they always rapidly close in with the enemy in walking in an easy-to-hit straight line, sometimes ignoring ledges & falling off even. Whereas if you give them rifles they try to keep their distance more and dance around/strafe from side to side. Then again all that dancing around is probably why their accuracy suffers at times.

Well, it's what aim-bots do best, after all. lol But I mean...when Boone/et all decides to stay crouched while sniping he'll get a lot more 1-hit sneak-crits and a fight is rapidly over. More often, especially against lighter enemies he'll do his sniper-dance and take 4 or 7 shots. When I shoot while backpedaling my aim suffers a lot and I assume it does for them too. heheh

I've only had enemies shoot a weapon from a companions hand a couple times.

I believe that ideal should be enforced to higher degree...more penalty for non skilled weapon use for Companions.

They may be better with one kind of combat but they all seem to do good with any kind of weapon.

Yeah but I will give my companions an array of weapons to hold for me, and they still choose what they want to use. There is also a rule of condition where they seem to use weapOns/armor in varying states of condition.

Companions pick the weapon with the highest DPS. So if you want to be sure they'll use one thing in particular, don't give them anything with higher dps than that one thing, to 'hold.' Think armor ist based on highest DT rating, and failing that, bonuses if any. Not sure about the condition thing haven't tested/looked it up...that is, whether it's actually about the condition or just the fact that if condition falls too low, something else you gave them to hold will now be stronger so they'll switch.

I tried giving Boone the All-American again. I now remember why I gave it up. He does just fine with the thing, but goes through tons of ammo. I know the 5.56 nonAP rounds are easy to buy, but still...I can give him 1000 rounds of it and it's gone in no time, vs. 1000 rounds of .308 that takes a while. I mean at lvl 18 I had him kill all the Fiends in that main above-ground area and he burned through 300-400 rounds just for that. My current playstyle, that means I'd have to take advantage of the save/reload at merchant thing to always have enough. I don't want to be shopping all day long. I don't think he kills better with it, either. Mostly the same ratio, altho slightly better at short range and of course more visually fun with all the noise & body impact animation. hehe

I prefer they just use their defaults. Won't ruin the condition of your weapons and you won't have to give them ammo, they seem to have an unlimited supply for their own weapons.

None, because they tend to eat them when they're hungry. Unless your on PC, you can fix that, or get your consumed item back... Lucky people >.<
